NYU Students, 26th Street Housing?

Hi,

I'm going to be staying in NYU this summer for a while in a single studio apartment at 26th street. Apparently, this dorm has a bad reputation for some reason, but I cannot figure out why.

My housing info says that each apartment has its own full bath and a kitchen, so what exactly is so bad about 26th street?

Thanks,
Allyson

It's pretty far from Wash Square and inhabited heavily by Medical and Dental students. Other than that, nothing!

Thanks a lot vercingetorix.

As I'll be taking classes elsewhere in Manhattan, I don't think proximity to NYU itself will be an issue. Do you know anything more about room size, layout, or amenities?

Thanks again,
Allyson

No I don't, other than what I've read. People seem to be happy there with the relative quiet. One would expect that with a population of upperclass/grad and professional students. You might try the NYU people's forum in LiveJournal and get some opinions there.
Good luck.

i heard 26th dorms are very small

I had a friend at 26th street. I am not sure if she was in a single room, because she had her own room with a locking door, but shared a kitchen and bathroom with another girl. The room wasn't terribly small, but it wasnt too big either. It was definitely a nice, quiet location.

For Undergrads, 26th Street might be a nightmare if they are sharing bedrooms. It's probably the most expensive of all the residence halls, and one of the most distant from the Main Campus (Water Street being the most distant of all, but still being better looking).

For a grad student who is not sharing, the apartments can be fairly decent in size. If you've lived in other NYU dorms, you might disregard 26th St. because it's not new. I've seen the Studios and they're pretty big, as long as they are for a single student. In the case of two-bedroom apartments, the area is also big, and some of the bedrooms have nice views up along second avenue. Unfortunately they also are very expensive too (17K/year studio and 14K shared apts. for 2006/07).

The 26th Street location has some things to offer though. All utilities are included, the atmosphere is mosly silent (although at the moment there is construction being done into the building). The metro stops are about 6 blocks away. Little India is pretty close-by (along third avenue). For the med students its an excellent place (since it is only one block away from the Med Center). There is free NYU bus-line route from the dorm to the Main Campus, and Both the East Village and Midtown are closeby.

On the other hand, for someone who has not been into the other NYU dorms, 26th St. may seem decent.
