NYU students answering questions...

Hey everyone!

I'm Emily ...and I'm Josh! Sound strange? It's not.

Heres the thing - we both were once in your shoes. We know it's hard. So hard! We've been through it all and we're still alive to talk about it. That's where you come in. Ask us questions and we'll do the answering. Yep, that's right.

I have a question: Have you ever heard of DID? Heh

hmmmm.....questions. OH! Well, if you really are NYU students, I have a few to ask:

1.) How's the socializing like at NYU? Are students really that cliquey and unfriendly towards each other once they have found their own group?
2.) How hard is it to get into Steinhardt? I'm trying to decide between Applied Psychology vs. Communications, but I have yet to make up my mind.
3.) Are Steinhardt students a small population? How are the classes like? Are they isolated from the rest of the NYU community in terms of housing and activities?
4.) What are some clubs that you recommend to check out/join if we get accepted and attend?

Uhh...yeah that's basically it.

Yeah, if any legit current NYU students would be kind and answer my questions, feel free to.

1.) No, I haven't heard that before. Most people I meet are very friendly, even if I only know them from class.

2.) Not sure. Not as hard as Tisch or Stern, but I'm not sure compared to CAS.

3.) Steinhardt isn't tiny, and you're only as isolated as you choose to be. In other words, if you decide that you only want to hang out with students from the same school, then you will. Housing and clubs/activities are never segregated (with the exception of some Stern-only events).

4.) Depends entirely on what you're doing. I'm assuming you're asking for useful clubs (since we can't possibly know about your interest in swing dance, for example), in which case there's a Psych club, and basically one for anything you think of.

there's even a milk and cookies club :)

hi! i am going to be doing a program in new york for an entire semester, but i am not going to be a student at any university in the city. how can i get to meet nyu students or students at other universities? any must go bars/venues? thanks

If the thread starters don't mind, I'll jump in too.

To answer your first question, MushaboomBlue, you'll find that you'll most likely have a sort of hierarchy of friends. You'll have the ones you hang out with on a regular basis (usually ones in your dorm/ones you really bond with), then you'll have ones you sit with in class/at club meetings and sometimes eat meals with, then there's the ones you meet and say hello to while walking to and from class. At least that's what I've found, since this is such a big school. And no, people will strike up conversations, and although people might think you're a little weird if you go up to random people at random times and introduce yourself after the first week, I don't think anyone will be like, "Ew, go away."

Everyone lives together (as in they put all of us in the same dorms, floors, and rooms). My roommate is in Stern with me, but my suitemates are CAS and Tisch. Steinhardt is a few hundred people at least per year... it's around the size of Stern? Maybe bigger or smaller? Not sure, but it's definitely not the smallest school.

Um... clubs. I don't know. There's A LOT of them. I have to figure it out myself, but there's so many, and you can start your own as well.

As for your question, maxy, I guess you can hang around in the Village. A lot of NYU students (as well as some far-venturing Columbians and people from Cooper Union and FIT, etc.) congregate down here, but you might have a hard time unless if you have a connection -- someone who can maybe introduce you to people? I mean, you could just introduce yourself... I don't think there are any spots, really. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, of course, but my friends and I kind of float around.

Thanks guys for the responses so far :) I appreciate it much.
