NYU students studying Communications/Broadcasting/Media

So when I called NYU inquiring about studying TV and Radio Broadcast (communications as most people know), they told me they dont actually have a program for that which I found weird seeing as how its in NYC and the most popular internships there are at magazine tv and radio stations, and its suprising that one of the most popular majors in the country is not available at one of the most popular SCHOOLS in the country. Anywho, thats besides the point. I was told that students interested in studying this individualize at Gallatin. So, I was just wondering if you have done this, or if you were a student at NYU looking to get into this field how did you go about it at NYU. What was your experience with a school that did not specifically offer the program you were looking to study?

Also…what type of internships are you getting?

They have Communications in Steinhardt which covers all of that (journalism, verbal, public speaking, some TV/Film and radio) then they have Film and TV in Tisch. I think what you are looking for is in the Communications program, you can still intern in radio and TV even if that’s not your only focus.

As the undergraduate division of the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication, our Bachelor of Science program offers students the opportunity to work with internationally recognized faculty. Our academically rigorous degree is grounded in the liberal arts, providing students with the critical thinking skills necessary to understand the sociological, political and cultural aspects of communication technologies and systems.
Fields of Study

Within the broad framework of communication, our undergraduates focus their coursework via specialized fields of study. This component of the curriculum provides both structure and flexibility to suit students’ individual interests and goals. Students select 3 courses within 2 of the following fields:

* Globalization and Cultural Production

 • Images and Screen Studies
 • Interaction and Social Processes
 • Persuasion and Politics
 • Technology and Society

Practical Experience

On campus, there are academic and networking events; student-led organizations; a student newspaper, Washington Square News; an on-campus television station, NYU-TV; a student radio station, WNYU; and state-of-the-art computing facilities, to name just a few of the resources available to students here at Washington Square. Beyond the classroom, students employ our broad internship network to gain valuable work experience in New York City, the media capital of the world.

I am not particularly interested in the cultural aspect…I would like to focus on broadcast journalism and print journalism. I was even informed by someone in the NYU counseling center that the program offered at steinhardt is not the one for me if that is what i am interested in. He told me Gallatin is my best bet…
