NYU Studio Art

Hey everyone,

I got accepted to NYU Steinhardt for the Studio Art Major. Has anybody else been accepted to this program and planning on going? What's your thoughts? Just curious.

Hey, I talked to you a little earlier! I got in. I’m visiting sometime soon. I’m a very, very, very traditional/classical fine art student. My biggest problem with the program when I first learned about it was that it is very… conceptual and commercial. They try and keep up with the art scene because they are located in NYC and many of their students will have work featured in galleries. However, after learning more about it and being accepted, I don’t think they expect EVERYONE to be so modern. Like I said, I’m very, very, very traditional and they accepted me with a generous scholarship. I think as long as your into the art you make and you’re doing and you do it well the style doesn’t matter. A minus with the program may be that there is no specific major like “painting” or “drawing” and instead it’s just “studio art” so my fear is that they won’t let me just focus on painting (which is what I like to do the most). Another issue is that I don’t think they give all upperclassmen studio space, which is, in my opinion, kind of essential. I’m still unsure if I want to attend because I’m not sure if I want to do art or art history. I think it’s all going to be up to how my visit goes and what new information they tell me.

Haha yeah hey! I have some mixed feelings also. My portfolio had both traditional work (charcoal figure drawings, still life) as well as some photography and graphic design. I agree with you when you said your a little worried about the major being studio art and no specific distinction. Although, that does mean your free to try out anything you want! I’m not completely sold on going to NYU but definitely excited to be accepted. We’ll see what happens.

i was also accepted for the studio art major! my only concern is that they don’t give us studio spaces until about senior year, and even then you have to apply for them and only about 30 seniors get them.

True, at the weekend on the square a student said that when you do apply, your pretty much guaranteed a studio. Im not for sure about that though. I sent in my deposit for NYU so I can’t wait for fall!
