My D told me that after her NYU audition they discussed various studios. She said she told him she would be interested in Experimental theatre. Now she is not so sure. What should we do? Wait to see if she gets an offer and see what the placement is? Or, head it off with a phone call to admissions?

If it were me, I would wait. I’ve read countless posts that indicate studio placements are often discussed at nyu auditions. Other posts have also indicated that students are sometime placed in studios that were not ones they were expecting. Again, just my opinion. :)

Don’t worry about it – they place you where they think you fit best, not what you request (at least as far as I can tell).

But in any case, ETW is awesome! My D is doing her advanced training in that studio and loves it. SoozieVT’s D also did, and had the same reaction. It is really designed to bring out the best in each individual as a person and a performer. (that’s my take on it as a parent)

All the studios offer good training and there are plenty of options to add and supplement that primary placement either through electives or through transfer into a different studio for Advanced training (beginning junior year). You can even transfer more than once for Advanced training – getting another year in a different theater acting studio and then switching to Stonestreet for screen acting (which is what alot of students seem to do). Not because they don’t like their studios, but because they want to experience different things…

I would wait. Tisch has probably made its decision already, but if they are still reviewing your application, why indicate that you might not be delighted to be admitted into any of their studios?

I’d wait, too. My daughter requested ETW and was assigned to a different studio last year. She did petition to change studios, but was then placed in her second choice, not ETW.

Thank you, everyone, for your voices of reason!

@Glass: I am wondering why your daughter requested ETW?

My D applied Early Decision this year and was accepted to Tisch back in December. She was also asked about studio preference at her audition/interview and later had second thoughts about her stated preferences. She decided not to pursue any action on her doubts. She will leave her placement to the department. She can change studios after two years if she’d like and she is open to being exposed to any of the studios. Sometimes it’s best not to try to control everything and be open to the possibilities. This whole college process is prone to second-guessing, buyer’s remorse and hand-wringing. I know because this is my third time (and last) through the process. I’ve learned to let go a bit, take what comes and look for the positive in it.

skewl, she requested ETW because of her interests-- she is an aerialist and also very interested in politics.

I always read this, but now we know it is true. Tisch really knows what they are doing. My daughter can not see herself in any other studio than the one she was placed in. And everyone in her studio is thrilled there. And yes she knows everyone, it is a very small studio.

I wouldn’t worry about the request. They will place her where they think she will flourish.

Don’t worry about ETW. Many Tisch students feel is one of the most desirable studios.
Experimental does not mean "weird’. ETW focuses on physical theatre. Many students fall in love with physical theatre once they are exposed to it.

My son is in NSB and takes a Physical Acting class in that studio. He had to audition to get into that class. The class is on Saturdays and it’s in addition to his studio days. He loves it too!

It’s unanimous! We shall wait!

Thank you, everyone!
