Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with NYU summer housing, and was hoping to get some advice on what I could do.

I submitted my application for NYU summer housing on May 12. I tried
logging in several times after that to check on my application status and the system kept saying I wasn't registered for some reason. When I called the housing office, the representative I spoke to didn't try to help, she kept repeating that she couldn't answer any of my questions and then she hung up on me. I received no word by email or by regular mail. After waiting for over two weeks (they say on their website it takes 1-2 weeks to make a final decision on applications), I believed that my application hadn't been accepted and had to make alternative housing arrangements, since I was going to NY in only a few days and obviously didn't want to be homeless. This morning, I woke up to an email from them about check in and confirming that I had been assigned housing. I canceled because I already had other housing plans finalized, but their cancellation fee at this point is $500!

I called the housing office and explained the situation to them, but they said that I'd actually been assigned housing the day after I sent in my app, and that it was my problem I couldn't log in and it wasn't their problem that the letter didn't arrive by normal post (they don't send confirmations by email, only by regular mail, and they claimed they'd sent out the letter). Which is completely unfair and wrong, because it isn't my fault that the letter didn't come either, and while it might or might not be my fault that I couldn't log in, it certainly is their fault that their rep didn't try to help sort things out. All I know is that I did all I could to track my status and then after the requisite 2 weeks I reasonably concluded that they didn't have any room left and scrambled around frantically to make other arrangements, and now I have to flush 500 bucks down the drain.

In the end, the rep me to write a letter of appeal, but I had the feeling it was just to get me off of their backs, and they're just going to respond with a "too bad." I sent the appeal letter, but I was hoping I could get some advice here. Anything else I can do? Anyone been through something similar?

Thanks!!
