I am from India and got admits in both Purdue and NYU Tandon for masters in cybersecurity. I am really confused about choosing the school. Please help me with this.
I like Purdue better, its a big engineering campus. Tandon is in Brooklyn, and not on the main NYC campus which is on Manhattan Island, a train ride away. Public transportation is great in NYC, but Tandon and NYC Courant/CS do not really interact much, so you would be doing everything at Tandon, classes and activities I believe.
Brooklyn is a nice location, but Purdue has the name recognition in India and the USA for cybersecurity.
See special cybersecurity programs at Purdue.
@Coloradomama but what about about the opportunities NYC will offer? Will purdue be able to offer similar opportunities?
Purdue has one of the largest job fairs in the country. My freshman was able to land both a summer internship for this summer and a co-op starting the next. Purdue’s location is definitely not a hinderance for job opportunities.
My vote is also for Purdue for your major.
@abhix98 Sorry for delay in responding. My opinion is that the Purdue quality of academics, and name recognition on the east and west coast, and internationally, overcomes its less desirable Northern Indiana location. Also, you will spend less to live in Indiana compared to Brooklyn.
With that, Brooklyn for living, may appeal to many younger students, NYC is a very exciting location for going out, museums, music, theatre, a world class city. It just does not come to mind, for getting better jobs, with what I know.
Purdue is ranked higher for engineering and CS, and specifically has strength in cybersecurity and can recruit better students, overall. Purdue is considered much stronger overall in engineering, if you want to take some electrical or mechanical engineering courses, although your masters degree may be very specific, its nice to take a few breadth classes.
Purdue is the workhorse program in the USA for technical subjects.
Tandon is lesser known, newer, formed only in 1973, with NYU in Manhattan being more focused on acting, theater, politics, economics, business, humanities and social sciences. Also the NYC region has so many good CS programs, such as Rutgers, Columbia, CUNY, Princeton, and Stevens Institute of Tech, so Tandon is not a stand out as the top Metro NYC CS program. Also further afield SUNY and RPI are very respectable CS programs with students getting
jobs in NYC too.
Purdue Rivals UIUC, Wisconsin, Ohio State, all pretty comparable for CS, with UIUC getting
a very top rank in CS, . but Purdue is close in quality the stand out name, the brand that is valuable on your resume. Purdue takes academics to a very high standard for its size. No one falls through the cracks there, even the big undergraduate program is very well done.
