I would like to pursue biomedical engineering or something related to that and can’t decide which school is better for that. I would like to transfer next year because the location of stony isn’t good for me and price of NYU isn’t really doable for me. Taking these factors into account which school is better?
I’d rather attend a school in a less than ideal location than a school that is not affordable.
So you’re going to one of these schools for a year and then transfer? Why?
@happy1 I am willing to go to nyu if I need to pay 10k a year which a few of my friends got. My aid isn’t out yet so I don’t know mine.
Also why I want to transfer @Muad_dib because I want to also pursue really high level physics and math. In my classes we do mit problem sets and all so I’d like to pursue hardest classes as possible. At NYU the physics classes aren’t paired up like e&m and quantum i.e but seperate .
@aortax I actually have a physics degree from Stony Brook and can tell you their faculty is first class and highly reputable. You will challenged.
@Muad_dib Oh! My friend said the physics is around or a bit lower than physics C and my teacher tends to do stuff past the curriculum
@aortax: When I was there, Stony Brook had Nobel laureate C.N. Yang on the faculty and he founded the Institute for Theoretical Physics, which helped attract top notch faculty. If your friend told you Stony Brook physics was subpar, then he/she doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
If the price isn’t affordable, and the academics don’t meet your needs, why is NYU even on your list?
I can go there for a year if I need to pay 10k a year. LIke if it will help me transfer to a school who gives good aid I think in the long run it’ll work out @Chardo .
@Muad_dib OH!!! Thanks!
NYU Tandon is Polytechnic University In Brooklyn that NYU bought out a few years ago… Just something to keep in mind, although I’m sure NYU has added improvements.
From a purely academic standpoint I think sbu physics is probably more recognized than nyu physics.
Sbu is better than NYU for physics. BUT if your goal is to get good financial aid, your best option is to attend neither, as transfers get lousy aid (and it’s even harder to get into an elite university as a transfer than as a freshman.)
Did you apply and get rejected from URochester?
@MYOS1634 I got waitlisted from URochester
You should send a letter of renewed interest but you’re right to focus on these two.
Do you need financial aid? Scholarships?
Where do you live? Would you go home on weekends from Stony Brook?
I live in brooklyn. I need financial aid pretty badly ( earn around 15ka year ). I didn’t do scholarships because I was dumb. I don’t want to go home on weekends. TBH I want to do a lot of research , learn a lot , and try to transfer out to Boston to be with my friends at MIT & Harvard .
Well, your situation is hard but simple: take a gap year.
(An alternative would be to delay graduation and participate in CollegeNOW! during a year while you “supersenior”. The only reason would be if you’re an English Language Learner or don’t have all your credits. If you did that, you could also apply EOP/HEOP - unless you did it already).
Keep your eye on the prize: a good college with scholarships.
What are your stats? GPA (weighted, unweighted), SAT/ACT scores, class rank?
If you’re top 10% you could get free tuition at Stony Brook: ask your Guidance Counselor tomorrow without fail. If Stony Brook is affordable, go there.
However it sounds like you desperately need scholarships, and (unless Stony Brook comes through) you will only get what you need if you apply as a freshman.
Retake the SAT or ACT in May - some colleges won’t accept standardized test scores after you graduate high school. Scores from May senior year will be accepted everywhere. Prep seriously, use the “silverturtle method” (from the Test forum on this website) and bring your score up, regardless of what it is now.
@MYOS1634 I have a 1500 on new sat , 33 act ( everything 34+ but grammar which is a 27 lol ) , top 10% class , 12 aps in total , and stony has given me a full ride purely through merit , but rejected for their other programs.
Can you email SB and ask if you could defer for a year to do volunteer work, and if you did would you keep your full ride?
If it were me, I’d take the full ride (and, I assume, honors college).
