NYU Tandon?

I want to major in computer science. I have a 28 raw act and a 3.4 UW Gpa. From Arkansas. 3 years baseball, 4 years tennis. NHS 4 years. Would I have a shot at getting into tandon school of engineering?

Why do you want to go there?

Do you mean like major or just why i want to go

Why do you specifically want to go to NYU Tandon?

I like my but probably can’t get in. Also if I graduate from Tandon, it just says NYU on my degree.

So? What’s so special about having NYU on your degree? Do you even know anything about Tandon?

Average GPA for NYU is 3.7 and average ACT is 30. You always have a shot but it is a reach. Put together an application that makes you shine and give it a try but come up with some matches and safeties too.

It’s a prestigious school dude

No, it really isnt. Aside from finance and theater for the best students, NYU is the most overrated and overpriced school in the country. There is absolutely nothing prestigious about Tandon. It’s a perfectly fine accredited school, but no better than a hundred just like it. In case you don’t know, it’s really Polytechnic Institute, a largely commuter school in Brooklyn that NYU recently bought to say they have engineering. It’s the ultimate example of branding. Slap the NYU name on it, and hope that makes it something special. The reality is that it’s totally separate from NYU, not even a campus, just a couple of buildings miles away. Again, it’s a perfectly fine school, nothing bad, but a real waste of $100k compared to every other school. As far as prestige, in the engineering world, it has none.

@Chardo Tandon is the 2nd oldest engineering school in the United States, founded in 1854. Yes, it was originally the New York University Polytechnic Institute (some people still say NYU Poly) but it was never a “commuter school in Brooklyn that NYU recently bought.” Its predecessor was the Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute in 1853, but by 1854 NYU had acquired it–I’m not sure if that counts as “recent.” You may be referring to the fact that in 1985 the Polytechnic Institute merged with NYU engineering. From there it was kind of a sovereign Polytechnic Univerity (but received professors and resources from NYU), in 2004 it became officially affiliated with NYU and changed its name to the Polytechnic Institute of New York University, and in 2014 NYU officially became the sole owner and in 2015 the name was changed to Tandon. However, this wasn’t NYU buying it “to say they have engineering”–they’d had engineering for over a century. It’s just been through a lot of changes. Also, it is a full campus, more of a campus than the Washington Square campus. The campus is 16 acres.

I’m not an engineering person so I can’t really talk about prestige in the engineering world. As for NYU in general, there’s a reason it’s the largest private university and the #1 rated dream school. We also have some of the best econ and philosophy programs. No school is worth 100k+ in loans, but NYU is a good school–we’re ranked both nationally and internationally–and if you have the means, there’s absolutely nothing wrong or overrated about it.

My point was that Tandon is physically separate from NYU, something many kids don’t realize, and the NYU name attached to it is relatively new. Poly has always been largely a commuter school. As i said, it’s a perfectly fine engineering school. However, for most people, it is the most expensive engineering school in the country. The NYU name does not elevate its value anywhere near that.

If you’re interested in chatting with a current student in computer science, I heard about this site called degreescoop.com. They have several NYU students in all different majors including computer science.

@wonderlanddd. You didn’t get the history of Polytechnic Institute and NYU Engineering exactly right. The state of NY brokered the merger of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and NYU Engineering in the early 1970s, basically it was a takeover of whatever remained of NYU’s engineering program at the time, and Brooklyn Poly took it over and renamed itself as the Polytechnic Institute of New York. PINY became Polytechnic University in 1985. Poly remain totally independent from NYU until the merger talks began in 2004 leading to the first phase of the merger in 2008. The full merger with NYU assuming full control took place in 2014, and the name change to Tandon in 2015.

Tandon is growing a lot after the merger no one is wrong here but students do still want ‘NYU’ on their degree. It’s stupid but people like me think it’s worth it. Plus it’s cheaper than other colleges of NYU. Did u get in?
