I’ve been assigned Third North dorm for my first year. My room is a double bedroom, 5 person suite on the sixth floor. I have a few questions:
-Am I allowed to bring my own mini fridge even though there’s already a fridge in the kitchen? I feel like 5 people sharing one fridge might be a little cramped, so I want to make sure there’s enough space.
-How big generally are double bedrooms? I didn’t request a low cost room, so this is just a normal sized standard room.
-Is it really as bad as everyone says it is? From the description of 3N on the website, I thought it sounded nice, so I ranked it as my 2nd choice. But after reading what NYU students who have lived there had to say, I’m really nervous about it. Apparently it’s too far, filthy, has rats, lacks a community, always loud and crazy, has bad food, etc. Are these just exaggerated rumors or is it really the worst dorm on campus?
My D was in 3rd North. Everything you wrote is exaggerated rumor and I have NEVER heard it described as the worse dorm at NYU. Have had 2 daughters attend and both did grad school there as well. It is a good location and as a new NYer you will get used to walking–certainly not a big deal from that location to classes. You will have to find room for the mini fridge in your room or the common area, but it will probably be good to have it. Since freshmen have to have a meal plan, even in 3rd North, there will probably be less actual cooking than you think.
I’ve never been inside a 3N room but the dining hall isn’t bad! It has the best pasta, IMO. I like it better than the main campus dining hall (Weinstein). I’ve never heard of it being filthy or having rats, and it’s known as the party dorm so I can’t see it lacking community. And the walk is tough, but it’s good exercise, and it’s REALLY not as far as it feels (especially once you move into upperclass housing that’s a 15+ minute walk to campus).
