NYU Tisch 4D TV/Film Portfolio Requirements

Hey guys, this is my first post so yeah, I'm still getting the hang of things.

Anyway, I am a senior who is going to attempt to apply for ED at NYU's Tisch. I want to study TV and Film.
They say that 50% of the decision is based on the portfolio, but I don't know what they want for a 4D portfolio. I'm not sure if it consists of multiple videos with a theme, or a one sample video.

Bonus: What are they looking for in a video, any special techniques or skills?

Are you allowed to bump on this forum? If so, here I go.

I have no clue what a “4D Portfolio” is… Anyone else?

Are you referring to the Tisch undergrad portfolio requirements for Part 4?

Except that would be 4A.

So please explain.

Tisch is extremely clear that what they want to see in applicants is the ability to tell a story visually. Storytelling is critical to exhibit in the portfolio. So… I’m not sure how you can get the beginning, middle, end AND show character development to overcome a conflict if you have a mishmash of film snippets, even if they all have the same theme.

I think what they want is someone who can tell a good story. You have a few ways to demonstrate that to them: essays for one, and your portfolio piece for another. Whatever you choose for the above: make it strong and catchy. They see hundreds: make them want to see more of yours. Capture them with your best work. If that is a single video, OK, or a compilation, OK. Just grab your viewer in the first few seconds and make them want more at the end. Check out some of the ones posted on youtube to give you an idea of what people submit. Here is one link to get you started: [“EXIT” - NYU Tisch Admissions Portfolio Film - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube). After you see those, you can search for more like them.

My AP Portfolio teacher talked about how video was a form of 4D art. But your post actually cleared a lot up for me.
@maddenmd
Thanks! I see what you mean. And thanks for the link to the video, I didn’t think about checking out some other pieces that were accepted.

Can anyone tell me how they accept actors into the program, and what they’re looking for?

Hey I am applying to NYU tisch early decision too and I was wondering if you guys think I should send this little short I made for film, this script I wrote, or neither
Or if you have any notes that you think would get them to where they needed to be that would also be very appreciated! thank you so much!
