Hi, so I’m planning to apply to Tisch School for the Arts’ Acting program and I’m just really nervous about the whole thing and hoping for some guidance.
I’ve heard that the Tisch admissions process is 50% academics and 50% audition, so first I want to ask about academics.
I think I should be a good candidate academically but if someone could verify that’d be great.
Academics:
35 composite ACT
2190 SAT
Class Rank: 61/349 (I know, not great)
GPA: 4.214 (weighted), 3.6 (UW)
APs:
Environmental Science-5
Calc AB-5
English Lang-5
Spanish Lang-5
Currently enrolled (all AP):
English Lit
Calc BC
Physics C: Mechanics
Statistics
World History
My other two classes this year are my two theatre classes, one is my acting class for seniors, and my other one is a freshman class that I assistant direct in. Will directing experience help any?
I’m also national merit commended and I’m current captain of two sports. President of Environmental Club and Law Club. My other big thing besides acting is Mock Trial, my team were state qualifiers three years in a row, and last year we were state finalists and I won best attorney for my state. I also have awards from Environmental Science competitions.
Ok, so for the audition/talent based part of admissions, I’m still working on what I want to do for my audition pieces. I think I can put together a decent audition. I’m very personable and I don’t get very nervous during auditions. Besides, I hear the Tisch people are very friendly. I’m wondering how much prior experience is taken into account? I have a lot of experience in shows at my school but not that much outside, will that hurt me?
Acting credits in high school:
Yank-The Hairy Ape, Eugene O’Neill
Jason-Medea, Euripides
Romeo-Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare
Lendall, Randy, Dave-Almost, Maine, John Cariani
Dave-Every 17 Minutes The Crowd Goes Crazy!, Paul Zindel
Saul-Play On!, Rick Abbot
So as you can see I’ve gotten some big roles at in a fairly competitive theatre program at my school. I know it’s hard to tell how an audition will go just by written facts, but what do you guys think?
Also: I have no singing or dance background at all pretty much. Will this hurt my chances?
Just as an aside, I’m a black male from Louisiana–I’m guessing there aren’t too many applicants like that? Does anyone know the gender or racial breakdown of Tisch Acting applicants? How important is diversity at Tisch?
Thanks in advance!
