NYU Tisch -- admissions

I posted on this site months back when I was just a high school kid who didn't try, but was determined to go to NYU once I knew what I wanted in life. I had a terrible GPA, no recommendations, and no clubs or extra curricular activities besides the Police Academy. With the intentions of joining the Navy, my resume was fine and dandy. Once I decided I was going to take a risk in the world of writing for television/film there was a lot of changes set in place.

Now I'm attending a community college with a 4.0 GPA, I'm the president of a literary society, and I'm also in Drama and Glee club. Any one of my professors would gladly offer me a recommendation. I've attended college workshops and I'm actively involved. I was also recently taken on board for a web series as a writer.

I know Tisch is selective, but I really want to get into the Department of Dramatic Writing. Will my resume be enough for admissions? I hear the DDW is mostly portfolio-based. I have decent scripts and fiction for my portfolio; how should I go about deciding what to give them? I also never took SATs, but someone who works for transfers told me I may not have to take them because of the college courses I've taken. Is this true?

Just any advice anybody can give would be greatly appreciated.

And any current NYU student who want to tell me anything about the school or your experience, feel free.(:

I transferred into NYU Tisch for film, although it was for production, so I may be able to answer a few of your questions.

First, if you transfer as a junior, you don’t need SAT scores. However, if you have fewer than two years of credits, you will need to take the SAT. Also, they’ll probably look more at your high school record if you transfer as a sophomore.

I’ve heard it’s 50/50 academics and portfolio for admission, but I may be wrong.

Finally, it’s not impossible to transfer to Tisch from a community college. I transferred from an equally competitive 4 year school, but I know plenty of transfers from community colleges.

I’m hoping to transfer into the Tisch Dramatic Writing program from community college also. I’m a little concerned though, because I just started working on a script and have had little time to work on any other projects for the portfolio.

I’ve heard that they look for creativity and narrative stylings when they look at portfolios. Also, from research that I’ve done on the internet, a lot of applicants seem to send in some type of satirical work.

I wish you luck!

@sittle Thank you! I’m registering for the Summer at NYU program next year! So this summer I’ll at least be able to take a course and see what it’s like. Do you know anything about this program?

@heathrawr182 I wish you luck to you too! It’s such a good program.
