NYU Tisch– Chance Me

Hi!
I’m going to be a senior in the fall, and am sick with nervousness thinking about my application for NYU. I’m planning on applying as a Film and TV major.

My stats are as follows:
GPA– 3.33 UW with 1 D (that was in AP U.S and I am in the middle of fixing it, but let’s say I was to not fix it)
AP: APHuG (4), AP Language and Comp. (5), AP Bio (3), AP Gov, AP Lit., AP Environmental Science (courses I’m going to be taking this year)
ACT Composite: 27
Reading: 30
Writing: 28
Science: 29
Math: 19
I’m planning on retaking the ACT after studying for it, and I plan on taking SAT Subject Tests (In Lit, World History and Biology E.)

I also have a lot of different extra curricular activities, and I’m not worried about seeming well-rounded.

I’m very confident in my portfolio, I’ve had struggles in my life that had a part in my grades being so awful, I come from an unusual background (both personally and academically), and I’m Pacific Islander and Hispanic. Do you think I can make it into NYU’s Tisch?

I know people who’ve gotten into Tisch film with grades like yours, although that was close to a decade ago. They also had amazing experience, like writing and directing a feature film with a $40K budget while still in high school.

That being said, I feel that in addition to your storytelling ability, you should really focus on your unique background and how that will enable you to tell stories that haven’t been told before. According to one professor I had who was once part of admissions, having a unique supplemental essay will really set you apart from the crowd.

Although, Tisch is an artistic program, they do look heavily on grades and test scores. It would be a good idea for you to raise that D.
