Okay I'm asking to prove my mom wrong
She thinks I can get into NYU for dance and business double major based on my grades
I know obviously it's an audition program (dance) and I am nowhere near as good to even audition, although I have a really strong modern background, but my mom is convinced I should audition because they might take me for my grades

Before I give you my stats, is she right? Would they take someone who is semi decent because they are smart or am I right and they want talent rather than high gpa

I don't even want to audition because I feel like ill just embarrass myself

Why would you want to major in dance if you’re not that good? From what I know, and I’m sure others with more knowledge will chime in, your grades could get you into the school itself, but only your talent for dance will get you into the dance program.
If you enjoy dancing, there are loads of studios where you can dance all over NYC and you could major in business at NYU and be able to possibly intern at some great businesses.
But, on the other hand, if you really want to major in dance, audition, you’ll never know unless you try.

It’s not that I’m bad at dance, it’s just that I’m not at elite level, like I could probably get into an average dance program even possibly a higher up dance program

But anyway I don’t know if academic stats are important but
Unweighted gpa is 3.9
Weighted gpa 4.6
All honors and ap classes since freshman year
I just took the sat and my practice test scores ranged from 1840-2160
Volunteer 2 and a half hours a week since freshman year
Dance classes are my extra curricular since age 3
And I’m Latina

Though I personally have no experience in dance (I did eight years of ballet about a century ago), my younger sister is now looking into professional dance, including the Tisch program. My help is all hearsay and anecdotal, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. Perhaps some other people here know better than me.

Are you a rising junior? If you are, you might be well-off trying to audition for the Tisch summer program next year. Whether or not you are accepted will be a good guess as to whether or not you have a chance at Tisch for college. Also, if you perform well over the summer, that wouldn’t hurt in the least.

If you are a rising senior, then it becomes a little more difficult. Like any dance company would, they are going to look first and foremost at your technical ability as a dancer. Things like feet, extensions, turnout, etc. are going to matter as much as, if not more than, your actual dance technique. In other words, if you are in your dance school’s pre-professional program, then you have a good chance at being accepted into Tisch, bearing the rest of your profile in mind. If not, then it’s pretty much a crap shoot.

Did you have any lead roles in your dance productions? Did you help your dance teacher choreograph a scene? Do you help teach inner city children to dance? Those kinds of ECs could help bolster your application. Again, if you are a rising senior, attempting to add those in at the last minute will look like padding. But if you’re a rising junior, you still have a chance to really show your passion for dance.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck! Tisch is a great school. :)

Care to chance me back?

If you’re only semi-decent, why do you want to major in dance? If you like it because it’s fun, join a club or something. I think arguably one of the best PA schools in the country is going to choose talent over grades in this instance, tbh.

Yeah you’re probably right, and I want to major in dance because I want to own a studio after dancing professionally (commercial dance mainly)
