NYU Tisch Dramatic Writing

Hi there,
How hard is it to get into NYU Tisch's Dramatic Writing program assuming that I have really good grades and over 2100 on the SATs?

What exactly do they look for in their samples?

Honestly, SATs play a very small roll in Tisch. What they are looking for is an all around unique applicant with very good writing samples. You should probably have written a full length screenplay by now and should be planning to submit it as one of your writing samples.

One of my closest friends was just admitted to the Dramatic Writing program this year at Tisch. In addition to the supplement she submitted a full-length screen play, which was quite humorous and very original. She also submitted a satire she wrote which was also very witty. Her dream is to write for SNL.

She had average SATs (1900s) and average grades (mostly As, some Bs, average course load). Tisch looks for much more than grades and test scores in their applicants. You would do well to focus the rest of your time on making the best, most original writing samples you can and concentrating on their application.

PM me if you would like me to send you a copy of the satire she submitted. Maybe this would help you see what I mean by funny and original?

Well right now I'm working on a screenplay that's a drama. Personally I think it's very good, and I'm going to show it to some people once it's done in a month or so. Will drama do just as well as humor for a writing sample?

I'm sure it will do just fine :) I think they really look for uniqueness and originality. Just be really honest with your work, don't try to make it all "fancy".

Just a quick question, what exactly do you mean by fancy?

I dunno, I think at first my friend who was accepted to Tisch wanted to make her screenplay have some deep symbolism that all tied together in the end. In other words, she was trying way too hard. In the end she just wrote things as they flowed out of her mind; when revising, she didn't add many more "ideas" to the screenplay, just tidied it up to make it as clear as possible.

I don't mean to try to advise you on how to write, it just seems that my friends simple, honest screenplay made a very favorable impression upon the people at Tisch. It certainly didn't contain verbose language or really any deep meaning, it was just a good story, witty, and easy to imagine being acted out in a movie or TV Episode.

Well I'm not exactly writing my script to be full of deep symbolism etc... I'm writing it to be a story, but to still ultimately convey some kind of message, or some kind of insight on the human condition.

well you sound like you're on the right track to me :)

That's great to hear! Any other tips in general?

Hey, so my parents aren't really involved with theatre at all and I just applied to Tisch for dramatic writing. I wasn't going to, but my English teacher reccomended it to me.

I am sort of in the dark about what they are looking for in the portfolio, so I submitted a WIDE variety. I submitted some short stories that were in our school paper, and some exceprts and monologues from plays I had written.

I was wondering if they would be impressed or if it would help at all that one of my full length plays is being produced at a professional theatre company in Seattle? And another at my high school? Do they look at that sort of thing?

If possible, can you please send me a sample satire or other form of writing that tisch accepted? Thank you.

I would loveee to get a copy of that satire piece. I think it would be really helpful and I’d really appreciate it!

Thank you

can i also get a copy of your friends sample? It would be great to see an outline of what one looks like!
