This discussion was created from comments split from: MT Admit Rates: Number of Applicants 2015, Class Size 2014 (or 2013), Number of Offers (if known).
That seems like a really high number for Tisch NSB. Is that offers? Or yields? And it looks like no new figures for them since 2012. We didn’t apply due to the high cost , but would still be interested to know their current acceptance numbers. I know it’s big, but didn’t think it was THAT big .
I looked up some notes and have a few numbers to add:
NYU-Tisch:
1400 applicants
Yield: 400 for all eight studios.
Of the eight studios, there are five acting studios, one directing, one production design and one MT (NSB).
So, that would make 50-60 accepted for NSB about right.
Also, he said that you are eligible to switch studios after sophomore year. Also worth mentioning that Acting Studio majors can take private voice lessons as electives.
CCPA:
850 Applicants
Yield: 75 total; 25 MT-Voice Emphasis, 25 MT-Dance Emphasis and 25 Acting
I that # is close for Tisch- but remember it’s broken up into groups of no more 15. I have remember audition #s as much higher- well over 2000, but have no hard evidence to back that
I also think the audition number for Tisch is higher than 1400 for all studios. My recollection was closer to 2000.
The number of NSB (which is yield, not offers made) sounds about right. When my D went to Tisch for MT, there were 64 per year in the MT studio. The class was divided into 4 groups of about 15/16 for all studio classes, which is a similar size to many other MT programs.
By the way, I am unaware of a “directing” studio at Tisch. Perhaps they were referring to Playwrights Horizons studio where directing is ONE option as a focus, but it is also an acting studio. There are 6 Acting studios that freshmen can be placed in. One MT studio. One production/design studio.
From our experience with other friends who go to NYU, NSB aims for a class of 60 and the freshman theatre class including all studios is typically around 450 students. So if you want to hedge your bets, be willing to accept a placement in any studio. As has been mentioned, it can be possible to transfer between studios after you are there. Or you might find they put you in the studio that actually is a better fit for you than NSB. I believe it is also possible to take voice and dance even if not in NSB. But please cheek with the school to make sure all of this is accurate. Interesting note: D had 2 friends who got in no other BFA programs about this time of year but were great academic students. They were both accepted to NYU in theatre, although not in NSB. So for those of you still waiting for that first yes - it is possible it could be to a great school like NYU. Hang in there!
@soozievt, yes, as you mention the “directing” studio I referred to was said to be part of one of the six acting studios, I used the wrong terminology there calling it a studio. The 1400 applicants figure came from the Director of Admissions at Tisch.
If the director of admissions at Tisch said 1400, then that must be it. Officials from Tisch have posted here in the past, and the number used to be higher and so it must have changed. Thanks.
Actually ten years ago (2005), when my D and I attended a Tisch information session, I jotted down the number of applicants stated and it was 2500 in my notes taken that day and my notes indicated that 1000 of those who audition were seeking MT.
Then, in 2008, this is a quote from an article in the NYTimes:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/20/education/edlife/theater.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
Granted, numbers today might be different, though that is a lot different, interestingly.
Seemed odd to me too based on what I have heard for the last few years. My layperson’s guess is that Tisch numbers may have declined as more BFAs have entered the marketplace. More competition. Even though the total
numbers nation wide may have been on a steady increase. Plus, since 2009 many of us don’t have the college funds we had hoped for and are searching for a program that might be more affordable. Again, just my guess
The numbers for Tisch this year are - just over 2000 auditioning and they will be enrolling 400 in the freshman class for September.
@Bogeyw reported 1400 applicants and that was from the Admissions Director at Tisch from notes taken by him this audition cycle. There was a discussion about this a few days back. Either way, it looks like odds at Tisch for any studio are somewhere in excess of 20%.
I have wondered if the quote from Tisch might have been a verbal slip. I took notes last year (and dug them out after the 1400 post)- at D’s audition we were told 2400 were auditioning (for class of 2018) Could he have meant 2400 this year and said 1400? Would seem strange if 1000 fewer were applying this year…
Maybe pm Bogeyw and see if these numbers were repeated, or what the context was? We have three numbers: 1400 (BogeyW), 2000 (alwaysamom) and 2400 – this from 2018 (toowonderful).
tramsmom, I saw that post which is why I checked with Chris. This came in an email from him this morning, which is what I shared.
Well- that seems definitive then
I will change the number on the Board. Thanks @alwaysamom!
Just a note, tramsmom, “Chris” at admissions is Chris Andersson who is the Director of Admissions for Tisch Drama.
I heard 2000+ too–from the Admissions Director at Tisch.
Thank you for checking, alwaysamom. These numbers are in keeping with what has been reported in official ways for recent years and so I am glad it can be corrected here now too.
Someone posted that the odds for any studio at NYU are 20%. While the odds may be in that ballpark for an acting studio, they are lower for MT. Traditionally, the odds at Tisch for MT are more around 6%.
Are there any numbers for applications vs. offers for NYU Steinhardt?
