NYU Tisch Studios

Has anyone heard about studio placements? Seems late in the game to me.

Not a peep!

When we visited NYU earlier this week Chris told us by Friday and probably late in the day. He did say they want to get the assignments out before the admitted students event - which is tomorrow…

I still haven’t heard anything and it’s 6:22! Haven’t their offices closed? Anyone else dying from the anticipation?

Two years ago my D received her studio placement email at about 10:00 pm central time. I know the waiting is hard - hope everyone gets great placement news soon!

8PM eastern today email was received

Both S’s got New Studio on Broadway MT – they already know that we’re priced out of this one, but they’re pretty proud of themselves :)

D just sent me a message 11 am Guam time (9 pm EST) she made it to New Studio on Broadway! Yay! Now the difficult decision to make :)

Congrats to all the kids above!

Are there different personalities of the studios besides the basic different theories they study? Is one known for being friendlier or stronger or more anything?

My daughter was placed in Strasberg. (She is an actor, not MT.) But it’s the last studio she would have chosen… Does anyone know anything about this studio (which is apparently being revived after being discontinued)? Their faculty page is … blank. Their notable alumni page lists some famous actors, all film and tv actors.

But when I google them it turns out a lot of them didn’t go to college (maybe they studied at the Strasberg institute a la carte) or, Claire Danes, who went to Yale. What’s up with that?

This is such an odd choice for my daughter.

Well, as you probably know, the focus at Strasberg is on method acting, which is not really heavily emphasized in many (if any?) other programs these days.

I’ve been reading CC posts about Tisch for four or five years, and I noticed in the past that it seemed fairly common for kids who auditioned for MT, but didn’t get placed in the MT studio, to be placed in Strasberg.

I really don’t know the reasoning behind the studio placements, but I doubt that it’s super precise. In the old days they asked students their preferences, and if they felt strongly about their choice it was probably sometimes honored…but then Tisch did away with that. I should think the NYU auditors would be able to get only the vaguest notion of which studio would be appropriate, from auditions.

If your daughter is still strongly considering Tisch (I know you posted elsewhere about many wonderful acceptances), it would of course behoove you to be VERY assertive in demanding information (such as: who the heck are the faculty?) from the school and the studio!

My Son was also placed in Strasberg. He is in NY right now checking it out. I think he feels relatively excited about the studio but slightly concerned. He would like to understand some very basic things such as: why they did away with it and why they brought it back? He is also wondering what the studio hours are? There is little or no recent information on cc regarding this studio. The curriculum has singing in it, which appeals to him. I am hoping someone on the thread has some thoughts they can share with me regarding the studio…

Fullhouse, I think the studio hours for all the studios are more or less the same – pretty much a full day on studio days, and no studio instruction on academic days.

I hope your son will be successful at finding out some good information that you can share.

fullhouse, I am looking forward to what your son has to say. My daughter was going to go to NYU on Thursday after visiting Bard, but we are reconsidering whether she should even visit NYU-- that is how disappointed she is in the studio assignment. Most of their alumni listed on the Strasberg page are film people, which would have suited her when she was 15, but she has evolved a strong interest in political theater, playwriting, and aerials (physical theater.) During her interview she talked about liberal politics and acrobatics. Maybe they went by her resume, which shows film work from a few years ago. She was pretty shocked when she opened the letter.

And internet research into Strasberg comes up with very little. Even NYU’s page lists some very famous actors as “alum” who did not actually go to NYU (they are very very successful high school dropouts who probably took classes at the studio itself.)

Here’s a link that will give you an inside look at Tisch. It’s only 3 minutes long and pardon the language. It’s from the Tisch 48 Hour Film Festival (where they summon all the film students, give them a topic and a catch phrase- and give them only 48 hours to complete a film). It was made a couple of months ago. Oh- and I personally (and I mean really personally) know the boy “starring” in the film is playing a character completely opposite from himself. Enjoy- it’s hilarious!

glassharmonica, did your D indicate at her audition that she would consider a studio other than NSB? Do they still ask that question? I have to say that I prefer how they used to do it, where the applicant could indicate a preference for a particular studio. It resulted in the kids researching the different studios beforehand and thus, knowing whether or not they’d be interested.

alwaysamom, she did not audition for NSB-- she is not MT (I only posted here because it’s about Tisch Studios.) She was hoping for Playwrights or ETW because of her particular interests, which were reflected in her resume and her her interview. Method acting is pretty much the last thing she would want to do.

Ah, okay. It’s hard to keep everyone straight here. I’m afraid I don’t have any particular advice. I would be interested, though, in the reasons that Strasberg has been invited back into the fold, so to speak. I think that Tisch should be open with accepted students about that. I will say that I doubt that her previous film experience had much influence on her studio assignment.

If I recall correctly, when Tisch made the decision a couple of years ago, the Strasberg students were able to complete their training there, unlike the situation with CAP21. It’s possible that your D may be able to be in touch with a current student and get the information she desires, if in fact, they allowed those students to do their advanced studio there. It’s worth a phone call.
