NYU Tisch Summer High School 2011

i attended the program last year for film, feel free to ask questions

To ozzyozwald & Buzzin: Did either of you hear back from NYU letting you know you were taken off the waitlist/rejected?

i just got taken off the waitlist!!! going for film!!! AHHHHHHH SOOOO HAPPPYYYYY

Hey, who else got in to the Dublin program for film?

hi! i got accepted into Tisch’s Photography & Imaging summer program!
I am so excited!!  :)
LauraCB, I’m going! I can’t wait! :)

Just this month, at the parent’s orientation, one of the Tisch administrators said that they received about 1000 applicants for all of the summer high school programs (drama, MT, film, etc.) and selected about 210 students (that 210 includes the Dublin program; the Singapore thing seems not to have attracted enough interest and was cancelled…). Call it about 21% acceptance rate…

Hi buffytvs,
My son is applying to Tisch and Emerson summer film programs. Can you tell me what he can expect at Tisch if he got in? And any advice on making a good impression on the application? He’s looking for an intense filmmaking and learning experience. What was your experience like with teachers, other students? What kind of projects did you do? Thanks.

I am wondering the same thing. the application says they don’t expect people to have any experience. Is it a good place for students who have started making videos already? How much filmmaking is there vs class time?

Hi! I am applying for the stonestreet screen acting workshop and I would LOVE to hear what people who have already done this program have to say about it. Have you guys already turned in y’alls application??

I wonder if we need to start a new thread to get attention??

YES!! Do it!!

OK, I’ll try!! Just barely started the process. S needs to write the essay and resume. He has asked his teachers for letters of recommendation.

Hello, this is my first posting to the site… and I am in the middle of helping my D fill out applications for Summer Programs in MT and Acting. Tisch is high on our list but we have a few questions. Maybe someone here can help. How do you know which of the studios you should apply for if you are interested in just getting there first and foremost? MT would be great but so would any of the other studios. Is there anyone on the forum that has been to the Tisch program? and of course, we are interested in other programs besides Tisch… any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Okay, I have talked to a couple people that have already taken the Tisch Summer Program and they all say that what the teachers there look for is how well you can collaborate with a group. They also recommend that you stress this in your essay. Talk about personal experiences and make it stand out. I also found a couple videos on YouTube that aren’t too long, that has some students at NYU that took this program and discuss how it prepared them for college and life in general as a performer or artist. Just search Tisch High School Summer Program on youtube. This is all the information I am aware of for the application as far as advice. If any one has something to add, it would be much appreciated!!

Thanks for the heads up on the YouTube Tisch videos. I checked out several and learned a few things to pass on to my D. She would def love the ETW I think as sheis into movement, improv, etc. The thing is that she is also very into MT and drama… Would live to know if Tisch would allow the summer program kids to move around a little between the studios. It does not sound like it. I’ll call them this week and ask more questions.

Yea that’s a good question! I just sent in my application for the Stonestreet screen acting workshop! I would love to know what they say about students moving to different studios during the program. Let me know what they say!

I had a long conversation with several folks at NYU yesterday and again with email today. Everyone has been very open and receptive to questions. So here is what I learned:

As far as the summer program:

  • You must select one program on the app but in your personal statement you can add that you have a second choice if your first is unavailable.
  • They began last summer (2012) a series of evening workshops that get each person in to see the other studios. Here is a quote from an email sent to me:
“That is, a student in ETW will have workshops (5-6 hours a week) in Meisner, Stonestreet, New Studio Acting and New Studio Musical Theatre.
We did this last year and it seemed to greatly assist the students in understanding the training the studios offer.”
I think this is great idea and makes me feel better about my D spending that time at Tisch… I was worried she might enter one studio then find she wished she had chosen another… and this would impact her decision to apply to Tisch.
Some other things about the summer program that might interest you:
  • The meal program is a minimum of ten meals a week at $540 total for the whole 4 wks but if you pay $880 you get 21 meals each week. You can grab a sandwhich from the cafeteria in the morning to eat at lunch because some of the studios are a bit of a walk. Stonestreet, e.g. is a little ways away while New Studio Acting and MT are on campus and Meisner is just a couple blocks away at 17th and 5th st.
  • The New Studio Acting/MT studios are a new thing at NYU (maybe couple years old) as their old contract expired with the studio external to the campus.

Here are some things I learned about NYU in general:

  • as far as Tisch vs Steinhardt… it is confusing… which one do you apply to? Well, they told me that Tisch leans heavier on acting while Steinhardt leans toward vocal training. It was explained that if you were a musician/vocalist and you wanted perhaps to teach someday then Steinhardt might be more for you, though they do get training in MT. I can imagine that if you asked this question of other students in Steinhardt that you might get a different answer as was given in a much older thread from 2003 by a young woman that decided Steinhardt was a better choice for her. You can search for that thread. But 2003 is a long time ago for a school like this as a lot can happen. I learned that Steinhardt has a summer program also but have not checked it out.
  • I asked about the academic requirements for entering NYU and was told the average freshman has SAT scores of roughly between 630-750 on the Writing, Critical Reading and Math and the average unweighted GPA is 3.6.
  • NYU uses the Common App so that is good. The Tisch school requires the supplement app as well and the two apps are seen and decided upon separately.

Hope this helps! Good luck and PM me if you have any other questions!

I’m applying for the Filmmaker’s workshop!

Also, I’m confused about the creative resume part… is it supposed to be your body of work or a resume about extracurriculars, awards, etc

Kirby,
Google Creative Resume Theater. You will see good examples. It should include your experience in theater/film etc; do include school, summer camps, local theater, etc and also your training in vocal, dance, etc. also add a section on your other skills and interests like juggling, improv, language, as this shows your “well roundedness”. It should be one page - see the samples on google that show the format. Hope this helps.
