Hello! I am currently an 8th grade student at a private school in Texas. I am very passionate about photography, and was curious, what does NYU Tisch look for in a photography applicant? I am normally an A and B student in 8th grade, here is my website/portfolio as of 8th grade [Corbin Walp Photography](http://www.corbinwalpphoto.com) - I also take photography at my school which has won top-program in the country for A LONG time- Thanks!

You won’t find much help on this forum. This is for the musical theatre program at Tisch. Try posting on the NYU forum rather than this one.

Hi Corbin. My son is a sophomore at NYU Tisch for acting. One of his good friends is a photography major and she is also from Texas. Since you’re in 8th grade- it’s good that you’re starting now to look. I would also try to make more A’s than B’s. It’s a very competitive school!

Corbin - Look for photography competitions in the coming years if you can. Present a show. Get published. Or whatever it is that photographers do. (Great that you have a website already!) Many NYU students seem to have achieved some uncommon success by the time they are high school juniors/seniors.
I just looked at your website!! Wow! I see you want people to practice on. CC is full of singers wanting head shots, if you want to practice those! :)

I would post this on the visual arts major sub-forum as well, but I would encourage you to be as high-achieving in the classroom as you can – including a rigorous courseload.

Show persistence and commitment in whatever you do in extracurriculars. While yes, outstanding accomplishments can help, plenty of people who don’t have any great achievements get in to Tisch School of the Arts in all its fields, but I imagine that they’ve demonstrated persistence and passion. Tisch is looking for people who are trainable and have potential to grow as artists. My impression from perusing its visual arts websites (my D was debating between applying for photography and drama and chose drama), is that the school is looking for a student’s ability to tell a story. Even a student who has no training or accomplishment in the field can show artistic potential that can be fulfilled with the training a BFA provides.

Hi Corbin! Here is the reply I got from my son’s friend who is a photography major at NYU!
Somethings NYU looks for is originality, Meaning you want your photos to stand out. No pictures of cats, flowers, or girls in white dresses spinning in the woods unless you can somehow make it so they have never seen it before, which is hard. They want you to think outside of the box. Also they like when you have developed a style. This could be compositional (like making diptychs) or it how you edit them. And last I would submit your photos in contests and things and even try to go to a photo related camp or summer program, they always like that.
