NYU Transfer Tips

Hey guys,
I am currently a senior in high school and is getting ready to commit to Brooklyn College. Even though I wasn’t accepted into NYU, it is still my dream school and I am planning to transfer there for my 2nd year. Are there any tips anyone can give me to better ensure the chances of my transfer? I am aiming to apply to NYU CAS as a psychology major.

Hi, Are you transferring into NYU for your 2nd year or Junior year? If you want to transfer after your first year, NYU will only have one semester’s worth of grades from Brooklyn College to evaluate you, so you may want to take one or two summer courses as well to give NYU more to base their decision on. I would also try the ACT test over the SAT and get above a 30. Take a practice test online to see if ACT is better than the SAT for your skill set. Take one or two SAT subject tests in your strongest academic skill sets. Finally, work on improving your essay(s) for the transfer application.

Currently transferring out of NYU. I’d recommend keeping your grades up and building close relationships with a couple of your professors so that you can have good rec letters. Also working and building up your ECs is essential

Know that as a transfer you won’t qualify for scholarships that will dent the cost. Maybe talk to NYU to see where you need to strengthen your application and take a gap year to work on it!

I think NYU does not offer gap year for transfer student.

Does anyone know if you can spring transfer to NYU CAS as a second-semester freshman? I will be attending a 4-year university in the fall, but I would prefer to go to NYU (I was rejected as a senior in hs), so would I be able to apply by November 1st, 2020 to get in for the January 2021 semester?

@akjerae1

It is definitely possible. Though it does say on the NYU website that transfer admissions is extremely competitive and that the most competitive transfer applicants have at least 32 transfer credits. But I applied this year with a lot less than 32 credits and recently got accepted, so it definitely can happen!

Hello I am a current first-semester freshman at Temple University. I was hoping to eventually transfer to NYU either for spring semester or fall. I retook both ACT and SAT this fall and only got sadly a 1100 and a 24. I have a high gpa now and a high highschool gpa but sadly I never took any APs. Inevitably I really would like to attend NYU asap and I’ve heard that it would be easiest to transfer during freshman year because enough freshman students tend to drop out after first semester. Should I still wait to apply until April for fall 2021, or are the circumstances of Covid maybe benefitting me if I apply for this spring?

@nyulover2021 not sure where you heard that about freshman transfers easier because of dropouts. I’m not sure it’s true in general but I definitely don’t think it will help in your case - because you only have one semester of college your high school gpa/rigor and standardized test scores will still be very important factors. Unfortunately the latter are very weak for NYU. So I’d personally recommend you wait till you have more of a high college gpa record. If you complete your freshman year first you will not need to submit standardized test scores. Also, what school within NYU would you be aiming at?
