NYU Transfer?

Hey! So I’m a second year student at a reputable community college in upstate New York interested in transferring to NYU this upcoming year.

I have about 55 college credits under my belt thus far and maintain a ~3.35 GPA, which will be higher once final grades from this semester have been submitted.

I have a TON of extracurriculars (volunteering/sports/jobs/internship) and a pretty excellent essay, which mentioned that I had a brain tumor so maybe that’ll strike some sympathy in admissions counselors? Haha.

I’ve been named to Dean’s List multiple semesters (and will be for Spring 2016 semester as well).

My SAT scores we’re not the best but not the worst either, 1880/2400.

My high school GPA wasn’t great, but I talked to an admissions counselor who said that since I’ve been out of high school for a significant amount of time (graduated 2 years ago), they will weigh their decision more heavily on my collegiate courses instead.

NYU isn’t my first choice and I know it might be a stretch, but I just thought I’d get some opinions to see if it’s worth a shot.

Which school and program are you planning to apply? HS GPA doesn’t matter as your college credits increase, my HS GPA was low 2 still got in.

Like kinderchoclate says, what program are you applying? Other than Tisch and Stern being the most prestigious schools, I think you have a fair shot to apply. I am also applying to NYU as a transfer, are you applying for fall 2017?

@kinderchoclate Originally I was gonna apply with the intent to enroll as a finance major but I think my odds are a lot better if I apply to the college of arts & science for economics instead. What was your GPA when you transferred? @tjxlstate I think I’m gonna apply for spring 2017, you?

@TransferFr0mNY Me too! I think our situation is pretty much on the same boat, except that I’m applying from Canada, which makes me an international applicant :S Do you know whether spring transfer is more difficult than fall?

I honestly have no idea! I know that certain programs don’t allow spring transfers so I guess it might be. What do you think? @tjxlstate

I got a 3.33 GPA in high school, and I was completely ashamed of how I did. It was the reason why I got rejected from all of the colleges that I applied to and why I had to start off at a community college. If you have a 3.35 COLLEGE GPA, I would be extremely concerned because your chances for TOP grad school AND transfer is decreased significantly. Your extra curriculars are good, but I would not expect it to take the fall for your GPA; it can’t. What I would recommend, though, is for you to possibly stay a third year at your community college. Really raise that GPA as much as you could. I’m not saying all of this to be mean or harsh-- I know it may seem that way–but I’m just telling you some insight.

But then again… I know a guy who had a 3.33 GPA in college and still got into NYU. But I believe that’s an extremely rare case because NYU’s average GPA for acceptance is 3.75, if i remember correctly. You’re GPA is far from that.
