Now becoming even more expensive:

And this is a surprise? Is there any college which doesn't have an annual increase?

Well, at SOME point.... tuition just simply has to stop increasing at the rate of 10% every two years. But, the real issue at NYU is the lack of adequate financial aid (purportedly lowest student rankings for financial aid in the US) that makes these increases absurd. I am fully and strongly supportive of John Sexton's aggressive expansion policy - supportive enough, in fact, that I reject the so-called TRAC organization and their stated goals at NYU. However, like so many other students who looked at the Washington Square News this morning with a lump in their throats, I have to ask myself - why won't NYU at the very least tell us what these massive increases in expenditure are FOR?

YES. Yes yes yes yes.

I don't mind if NYU's tuition has increased because of necessity, but I might reconsider my going there if the rise was made simply because they CAN--no institution should be that bloodthirsty. Lucky for me that I won't ever find out, or else my conscience would overcome me.

I'd like to dispell the rumor that tuition rises at NYU simply because it can. While NYU is currently undergoing a major capital campaign to raise the funds in our endowment, we simply lack the type of endowment that would cover the maintainance of all operations at the University, not to mention the meeting of full-need for the students who receive financial aid here. Indeed, the lack of a substantial endowment has been a challenge for NYU since its inception. There is one simple answer to "what are these increases for" and that answer is YOUR EDUCATION. Tuition dollars at NYU fund major University operations, everything from where you live, where you attend courses, and where you study.

In addition to being a Committee Member at the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, I am also a graduate of NYU. On a personal level, I am intimately familiar with the personal expenses of an NYU education. As a young person I knew that attending NYU, despite the cost of attendance, was not something I could pass up. This was a personal choice and it is one that each and every student on our campus has.

You know, that's all true. When I visited the "campus" not long ago, I was REALLY impressed with all that the school had to offer--dozens of well kept buildings IN the city (I can't imagine that that would be easy to finance). And they're all in prime locations, which I completely forgot to give NYU credit for. I guess that raising money is the only way future students WILL be able to get good financial aid.

I think I just feel really badly for all these students that have dreamed for YEARS about NYU, GOT IN, but can't go. How crushing that must feel, I can't begin to understand.

Just keep this in mind: without ANY financial aid, it costs more for NYU (or any other college for that matter) to educate you than the tuition you pay.

Also, what is the inflation rate these days? Isn't the predicted inflation for 2006 in the ballmark of 3~4% (not completely sure)? Given this, the tuition increase does not seem too unreasonable.

Yea, listen to jaimelajolie. if a tiny 1-bedroom apartment in NYC costs $1000 (is this true?) a month, just imagine how much those all those buildings cost, not to mention the maintanence. I was in awe at the library. OH...and u can go watch free movies in it. awesome.

^ $1000 if you're living in a nice area of brooklyn maybe.. but manhattan? no way. Unless the building is falling apart hahaha.

Yeah, I have so many friends who got into NYU but couldn't go because of the financial factor. Its really sad.

^true, real estate is so much higher in NYC even horrible shanty studio apartments run in the $1000+ range

NYU's tuition will hike every year too.

Well, I used to think NYU was crazy expensive....

....before I got my letter from U Chicago asking me to take out 48,000+ in loans >_<

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT's ridiculus! Oh my!!!! We ARE lucky then! eeek.

yeah a lot of texas public universities have raised their tuition by around 10% this year. haha i heard about those first so when i heard about nyu's i was just like uhh big deal? lol

yeah but texas raising their tuition 10% is not a whole lot...the tuition was so cheap in the first place it was time for a hike.

well i didnt just mean university of texas (although they did, and i agree with you that its cheap), but i heard that some other ones did too (i cant remember which right now, wasnt really paying attention. but yeah, still cheaper than new york lol
