NYU [tuition] Is Now FREE for families making <$100k

The NYU Promise …
Starting in 2024, NYU will offer incoming domestic and international undergrad students full tuition scholarships if their families earn less than $100k and hold typical assets. Renewable every year.

NYU medical school is already free for all students, but the NYU Promise is a new program for undergrad students on the NYC campus.

More info and FAQs here (transfer students are not eligible; a little fuzzy still on whether current students admitted as first year students will be covered moving forward):

ETA: NYU just clarified that current students are covered too!

“Will there be adjustments to current students who qualify?
Yes. Any students enrolled at NYU in fall 2024 (including sophomores, juniors, and seniors) who meet the criteria will have their NYU Scholarship adjusted for the start of the fall 2024 term.”

Just to make it a little more clear, tuition is free for those who make 100k or less with typical assets. Not all those under that would get free room and board (ex. a family who makes 100k a year likely would not get free room and board).

I didn’t see anything mentioning room and board either way though so not sure.

It’s not free…it’s free tuition.

Medical school:
Free tuition + free health insurance coverage.

Cost of living in NYC isn’t exactly a bargain.

Very true! And the rental market is very competitive. NYU guarantees 4 years of on-campus housing to incoming freshman, but that’s expensive too.

And is it need blind?

In it, it says that if a person has additional need demonstrated beyond tuition (eg room and board) they will provide additional funds. It may not add up to a full ride depending on the demonstrated need.
