I’m having a tough time deciding which college to choose:
NYU - Tisch School of the Arts (Film and Television)
UCLA - Theatre (General Studies)
UT Austin - Liberal Arts (undeclared) —summer sessions
I’m leaning towards NYU; but it’s so expensive and the big city life without much of a campus is a little intimidating. My parents want me to go to UT. This is just tough stuff.

yea definitely!! i love NYU and its a bit like a dream school for me, being in the big city and all. but the problem is, NYU is soo darn expensive. i just don't think i can handle having to worry about affording nyu while being there... i want to be able to fully concentrate on my studies and all the other fun stuff while im at college... and also.. is nyu always that stingy with giving out financial aid? cause i didn't get as much as i hoped for...

im unfamiliar with tisch so i cant compare, but i go to ucla and my roommate is a theatre major there and he's having a good time, he seems pretty relaxed too, and he's always stoked about seeing or meeting famous people at the events that he goes to.

I used to work at UT Austin. Austin is as cool a city as you will find. The school is a bargain, and the RTF (Radio-Television-Film) program is one of the best.

On the down side, UT Austin is really huge, and you may find that you have problems getting into oversubscribed classes, which is likely to happen to you at least a couple of times. Also, some classes will probably be taught by Assistant Instructors, who are graduate students themselves.

If you are self-motivated, UT can be a great experience, but the streets of Austin are full of kids who got to interested in the music/bar scene and forgot to pay attention to their work, and who now live the Slacker life.

Do yourself a favor and maybe visit both campuses (I don't know if you have the requisite time or money, but still...) NYU is a great school in a great city...but...NY City isn't for everyone. I personally enjoyed living there for a summer internship, but I don't know if it's something anyone can do.

Also, consider the financial aid packages you will receive, if any. Honestly, you're going to hate the great school if it gives you a poor living standard. UCLA is also in an expensive area as well, keep that in mind.

Above all, chose whichever school you think you'll enjoy being at the most. That's what matters.

i know a friend who went to NYU, hated it, transfered back to a california community college, then transfered to UCLA and likes it there now. what a horrible path to take. 3 schools in 3 years, what a rocky ride

I think you're parents obviously want you to attend UT because it wont be such a financial burden. Seeing that you would be applied out of state tuition for UCLA I say go for Tisch, unless UCLA meets your need like 100 times more than NYU

UCLA is definitely more expensive and the cost of living there is really expensive too. REmember, the dorms are cheap, but when choosing schools like UCSB and UCLA someday you'll want to move out to an apartment and its going to cost you a royal fortune. Especially in Santa Barbara....you'll never get a decent apartment for a bargain price. The cost of living in SB is very high too...its like living in a resort town.
