NYU, UMiami, GWU, UMD or Tulane?

So I applied to 14 schools, and unfortunately 9 of those including Duke, Columbia, Emory, Vanderbilt, UVA and surprisingly USC were rejections, so my options have come down to NYU, Miami, GW, Maryland and Tulane, none of which I'm really thrilled about, so I have no idea how to choose. I'm visiting all of them but I could use some opinions! Help!!

I graduated from UMiami, and my husband from Tulane. Sister works at Tulane’s library and nephews attended.

What do you want to study, what are looking for in a college? Where are you from?

I’ll be happy to give any help I can.

I’m biased towards Tulane because barring good financial aid from Emory I will be there next year, but I truly feel like it would be one of the best choices, especially if you want to be somewhere that you can do great community service, experience a whole new culture, and be in a medium sized school with great parties.

NYU I’ve heard isn’t doing too hot. Just from what I’ve heard on these boards recently, a high concentration of negativity surrounding the school.

I don’t know much about UMiami, only that everyone that applied to UMiami and Tulane from the Tulane group committed to Tulane in the end.

GWU is good, but overshadowed by Georgetown.

Don’t know much about UMD.

I also applied to NYU, GWU, & UMiami. All of those are great choices, in my opinion. GWU - the dorms are really nice and DC is, well, DC. UMiami - I never visited, but it seriously looks like a resort. NYU - NYU rocks. New York City is like nothing else.

UMiami is a very different school than GWU / NYU. UMiami = warm, campus, big time sports. GWU has sports but none of those other things – NYU has none of those things. But GWU and NYU both have their pluses (internships because they’re in cities, name recognition, etc)

If you are going into poli sci I would definitely say GWU. If you’re talking business school and you got into NYU Stern, I would definitely go there. If you would be upset if the temperature dipped below 60 degrees, I’d choose UMiami.

I’m from northern Jersey, which is one of the reasons why I’ve been leaning away from NYU at this point because I have lived right outside NYC all my life. I’ve been to all the hottest clubs, have put up with the snowy weather, and am familiar with the miserable, frantic, self-involved people in this area. While NYU has a bit of a better reputation than the others and probably more opportunities (NYC, of course), I feel like I need a change. To me, GW seems like the NYU of DC – it’s nice, lots to do, a great city, but for the most part a rich, snobby bunch of students and yes, the second rate Georgetown of DC. I visited Tulane recently and liked it somewhat but wasn’t crazy about New Orleans as a college city. It seems like a fun place to party and go wild on occasion but I don’t know how much else it would have to offer for my 4 years there. I’m not sure what I want to study yet – might major in something in business, law or communications and I’m sure I’ll minor in some performing art like theatre, drama, film or dance because I’ve done that stuff all my life. Chances are that I’ll go to graduate school so I want to make sure I’ll get a degree that will help me get in somewhere good. Is the Miami party school reputation true? Did you have a good experience there? Have you found it easy getting a good job in your field after graduating? What do your sister and husband say about Tulane?

nikki: based on your list of schools, you appear to be a very good fit for NYU and GW; if NYC is “too close to home” as you say, GW will definitely provide you with the intellectual challenge that you need, and the environment you are looking for…

You did leave 3 or so schools out of your list of 14, but I’m assuming that those schools are not options for you at this point? Or are they waitlists you have no interest in? jw

The other 3 were also rejections - Georgetown, UNC Chapel Hill and Barnard

Nikkichess-It sounds like Miami would be a good fit for you since you mentioned business and communications and getting away from the NYU “scene.” One of my kids attended GWU (she chose it over NYU to get away from the NYC area and because it was smaller and more condensed). Another of my kids will probably attend Miami. He didn’t like the totally city feel of NYU and GWU, wanted a more traditional campus and sports scene, but likes being right outside the major city of Miami for future jobs/internships in business/communications. The Miami campus is beautiful and all our interactions with the administration have been very personal and helpful. My S didn’t consider Tulane since he didn’t feel the city of New Orleans had as much to offer as the city of Miami. (BTW I’m not prejudiced against NYU, I attended grad school there and loved it, but neither of my kids seemed to like it for undergrad.) Oh and Miami also has very strong music and performing arts which is another of your interests.

nikki, where are you in NJ? Just out of curiousity, because I’m from Wantage and am also trying to decide between GW and Tulane…

I think people here are underrating maryland. Granted, I’m a little biased because I am going there, but it has a few things going for it. First of all, it is the cheapest of the 5 by far. I know GW and NYU are 2 of the most expensive schools in the country, and Tulane and Miami are private so they can’t be too far behind. I don’t know what your financial situation is like, but that may be something to consider. Academically, it’s not as good as NYU, but besides that it is at least as good as the others. If you’re doing business, I’ve heard Maryland has a very good business program (not sure about that because I’m going to be doing science, but that’s what I’ve heard from friends), and they’re close to DC. Also, like Miami they have the big-time sports and party scene, plus nice weather (probably not as nice as Miami, but it’s definitely much better than NYC). and a nice campus. If you’re worried about snobs, I would think you would find much fewer of them at a big state school like Maryland.

Here is my (limited) knowledge of these schools. I will be in your position (somewhat depending on what scholarships I get from these schools) in a years time since I am looking for schools that have good business programs at which I can get good scholarship $. The best business program out of Tulane/Miami/GW is probably going to be Miami. Stern beats out all of them, and I really dont know anything about UMD. Miami also has a great honors program supposedly if you are interested in that. However there are a lot of drawbacks for Miami. First it has a reputation of a jock party school, believe me i like to party, but when you are surrounded with people who don’t care about their studies but which club they are going to that night, that really doesnt make a good learning environment. UMiami students from what i gather will usually fit this stereotype: wealthy, snobish, trust fund kids who dont have a care in the world. This is where i think you will find the difference between Tulane and Miami kids, I think the Tulane kids will be more genuine. (Tulane is also considered a party school). Tulane and GW have relatively similarly ranked business programs. And don’t worry about New Orleans being an uninteresting city, it is anything but. There may not be a big club life, but the place is amazing. I love it. I will probably apply to these three school come fall, but i have to say I will have trouble choosing between them if my other options don’t work out (top choice McGIll!)

Im in a similiar situation, accepted to GW and Miami. GW for business, Miami in the Entrpeneur program Saw both, liked both. Miami has a better program, no doubt but contacts seem to be better if you want to work in the northeast. Im from Jersey also. Its a tough decision.

I think nikki must have made her decision by now–it’s after May 1.

First of all, never base ANY decision pertaining to higher education from these boards. The only info I would take seriously on this site would be residence/student life and some admissions info. Also, finding someone who went to the school of choice and pm’ing them wouldn’t be a bad idea… but the ideologies surrounding prestige, academic prowess and which ivy is superior should be taken for entertainment purposes only.
NYU is doing just fine, I am sure. It is a great higher learning institution that is just different from a lot of people’s ideal college. Plus, NYC is not for everyone.
If your interest is anything to do with politics, then GW is probably a wise choice. Otherwise, I would strongly recommend visiting U Miami, especially when it is in session. It is a great university, very nice campus and very diverse. I think it would have been an amazing place to go to school having visited there, knowing people who graduated from there (and loved it) and having been to Coral Gables, which is a very nice area.

I from NJ as well (along with nikkichess and devinjhenry) but not north NJ, down the shore near Belmar.

My dilemma is, between UMD and GW only, which has the better undergrad business program?
