NYU v. Berkeley

I have a week to decide and its driving me crazy.

I live in California and was admitted into NYU Gallatin and Berkeley Undeclared. Because I am a California resident, Berkeley is very cost efficient and I received a $2,200 scholarship. NYU, however, seems way too expensive, but they gave me a $20,000 scholarship which brings the price difference for all 4 years down to around $15,000.

So prices aside, I'm a very artsy person and I have no idea what I am going to major in. Gallatin will give me the freedom to take classes in any department and create my own major accordingly. Cal, however, is more structured and does not have as strong of an arts background (that I've seen).

My parents both went to Cal for two years (transferring from Pasadena City College) and loved it and are pushing that idea.

But as for the weather, I am ALWAYS cold in Southern California... I probably would freeze in NYU, but everyone keeps saying if I dress for the weather I should be fine. I am also terrified of going to school on the other side of the country and hating it and not being able to come home and visit often because of the cost of airfare.

I also got into NEU, Syracuse, Ithaca, UCLA, Fordham, and Hampshire, but have pretty much ruled them out for one reason or another.

HELP?

This looks like a UC Berkeley decision to me

Everything depends on how hard it would be for your family to come up with the money for NYU. Sit down with your parents, and run the numbers for both UC-B and NYU through this handy calculator, then talk with them about what the results mean: [FinAid | Calculators | Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Award Letter Requirements - Finaid)

They already said they would be willing to pay the difference so the choice is now entirely mine.

NYU! If finance is no longer a concern, and you consider yourself an artsy person, NYU seems like the perfect place to go. Besides, how often are you really going to visit home?
Usually people only really only go home on thanksgiving, preferring to spend the shorte holidays with their friends.

Go to New York. You’ll love it.

If you can afford it, then you should take a chance on this new adventure. It will be a big one!

Gallatin is a gem inside NYU, and sounds very good for your interests. I have nothing against Berkeley, but college is a good opportunity for an adventure.

No one with a dorm room has ever frozen in NYC! A bit of weather difference will add to the experience!
