I'm sorry for starting another comparison thread but I'm really conflicted right now! I have applied as an international relations major (although my major is H00 right now...), but I am not at all sure if I really want to pursue a career in it. At this point, I'm fairly confused as to what exactly I'm passionate about. So I want a well-rounded undergraduate program as I'd be prone to major changes. The question is which is the most well rounded college from the ones I've been accepted to?

NYU-CAS
Carnegie Mellon-HSS
UCSD-Marshall

Others that don't seem as prestigious:

Pepperdine
George Washington University
UC Davis

Strike UCSD completely. A UC degree not from Berkeley or LA is still awesometastic, but not comparable to NYU or CMU in terms of weight with employers. CMU’s humanities program is certainly well rounded (you take classes in almost every area your freshman year and are only allowed to declare in the spring), but so is NYU’s. I guess it just comes down to a matter of area and affordability.

I believe CMU is the most prestigious school among all. NYU is great in math and NYC is where you find countless opportunities. So if money is not a problem, I’ll go to CMU for better education if I were you.

IR in general would imo make GW a top choice (and even consider Georgetown…or Tufts…but you applied already so w/e)

CMU is pretty well rounded, but if you directly compare CMU IR with GW IR I think that GW may win. Not sure about NYU IR. Overall, I’d say CMU or NYU.

Also, on another note, I’m a student at CMU and I’ve met a total of one (1) undecided major :D. Generally people here have a decent idea of what degree they want - whereas at NYU you might have more people in your boat. If you want to switch majors in HSS it should be fairly easy, however if you say decide you want to do CS or Business (tepper)… etc then you have to apply for a transfer.

Everyone’s undecided as an HSS freshman. Trust me, you’ll find plenty. Additionally, even declared freshmen often aren’t sure if that’s what they want to do-- there’s a lot of college switching, especially to/from HSS.

was your financial aid good for both CMU and NYU?
If NYU poses no financial risks, do it for IR. If you have a ton of unmet aid, you’ll get your money’s worth if you do Carnegie Mellon.

@chrgra NYU basically gave me a ton of loans and said my full need was met. :\ I really don’t need all these loans. As for CMU, I STILL have not gotten my financial aid package!

Another general question: Is it easy to transfer between colleges?

I got my package from CMU and thought that it wasn’t going to be good. However, they gave me a 47 k package (41 in grants, 6 in stafford loans). Definitely wait for your CMU package before you make the choice.
