^ I suppose that’s sorta like interpreting freedom of religion to also include freedom from religion. The tobacco lobby is very strong in parts of the south and it’s definitely a huge cash crop in NC …

Dorms or no, I think you’ll be hardpressed to find any drama department where you’ll be completely satisfied if you’re a militant nonsmoker. Amazing how many people who know they’re going into something where money is likely to be very short who allow themselves to become addicted to such expensive nastiness. It seems to be true of artists in general. A Bohemian “rebel without a clue” thing I suppose.

Meh … I went through a phase where I smoked a little between the ages of thirteen and fifteen, but was lucky to not get addicted. I keep some non-nicotine cigs around in case I need them for a role, but haven’t so far at school. I know a girl who burned up her purse and almost burned down her school’s theatre from not knowing what to do with the butts when she was using cowboy killers for a scene …

fish, there are smokers in EVERY crowd. The issue was that the school was providing a living situation for smokers and that is unusual. Today, most schools would ask you to smoke outside. Also, it was ironic to have “smoking floors” listed as one of the accomodations for students in order to meet “wellness needs.”

Maybe those students have a need not to be well. Well??? ;)

Aww, Sooz … Did I leave you all confoozed and unamoozed? So sorry.

Consideration granted for wellness needs in the converse … Magnanimity indeed! LOL

“Dorms or no”? The issue is not smoking, per se… it is *dorms, * of course.

We saw lots of chain smoking students in Boston but they had to run outside and huddle together in the freezing rain to smoke according to Massachusetts law… they looked like second class citizens, poor things.

I think it’s SO stupid for teens/young adults to smoke. Do they not know the side effects such as lung cancer. It makes me sick to my stomach. I loose respect for those kids at my high school.

Early, how is it that you post during school hours??? I’m not trying to be nosy, just curious :)

You’re an early bird, good for you! If we hadn’t been shlepping all over the country looking at schools I have no doubt my son would have slept in until 2pm every day.

I could never do that, 9:30 is that latest I can wake up. That’s late for my family.

Aren’t schools closed for Good Friday? I guess I’ve been back in Canada too long to remember. They’re closed here today and Monday.

I’m on Spring Break so it is. But last year we had school on Good Friday. We go back Monday. My cousins in Florida were off last week and my mother’s friends are off next week and they’re in Buffalo. It depends on the area. In South Florida the kids were off for Jewish holidays, here we’re not. But there are no Jewish people around here. Each county makes their own rules. People may be off different times in each state too.

We visited UNCSA last week (daughter accepted there, and at three other BFA programs) and I think you are making a HUGE mistake to rule it out. After our visit, daughter is 100% sold on the UNCSA program. It was incredible. The professionalism amongst the students was so impressive, and countless students came over to us to tell us how much they adored the program. My daughter was able to spend the day in classes and she was literally blown away by the teachers and the students. The talent was top notch and the teachers were focused, and intense, but supportive. That night, my wife and daughter and I were invited to watch rehearsals for the three plays they are mounting for the end of the year. We were all blown away … I couldn’t believe we weren’t watching a broadway show. And I speak from experience. I am a film director myself, and have cast hundreds of roles in my career … Acting is my passion and I have seen student productions at many of the major programs as well as many senior BFA showcases… nothing has compared to what we saw at UNCSA. We watched Gerald Freedman directing – he’s a legend for a reason. You can tell I am on a high, and this is my first post here … but when I saw you were ruling out UNCSA because of your audition experience, I just had to chime in. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
