I was accepted at NYU College of Arts and Sciences and the University of Oklahoma's Honors College. I'm majoring in History.

It would cost me about $5,000 to go to OU (with fees and room & board), and I would have a laptop stipend of $1,500 and a study abroad stipend of $1,500 (both one-time awards).

NYU would run me an estimated $8,000 a year. Also, I wouldn't be sure if I would get the same amount in financial aid each year- my dad is in a poor financial situation that I do not expect to improve, but I'm afraid even a small drop in finaid would make me unable to attend. If I had to stop attending after my first year, that would be a problem because I would no longer be offered a NMF scholarship elsewhere.

In both situations, I'd try to get work-study.

If costs were to be put aside, would an Ivy graduate's school be more likely to accept someone with a bachelors in University of Oklahoma's Honors College or NYU College of Arts and Sciences?

(one more question: When does NYU send out invitations for their Presidential Honors Scholar Program? I'm assuming I didn't get in.)

NYU at 8000 a year? Is that with loans? If that’s with huge loans, I would go to Oklahoma.

No, that’s without taking out loans, though it is an estimate with the assumption that I get work-study (aka 3k a year). I don’t have to pay for room/meals because I would stay with my aunt and uncle (its a return favor, we did the same for their son).

OU’s website estimates 8k-9k a year for non-resident NMFs. With work-study/part-time job, it would hopefully be 5k-6k a year.

UPDATE: I just realized that I haven’t received my need-based finaid offer from OU. With my 4k Federal Pell grant, it would be 1k-2k a year if I get a job, or still 5k-6k if I don’t get a job.

Worst case scenarios
OU: 5k-6k a year. Debt after four years: 20k-24k
NYU: 11k-12k a year. Debt after four years: 44k-48k

Better case scenarios (with work study)
OU: 1k-2k a year. Debt after four years: 4k-8k.
NYU: 8k-9k a year. Debt after four years: 32k-36k.

With NYU, I’d have to scrimp a lot and hope employers will be impressed by the name after I graduate, but its my dream school- I love the location and my department’s faculty. OU Honors College is much less, and I’d be able to study abroad with the stipend and get the experience of living on-campus. The faculty is decent. I wouldn’t mind going to OU. I prefer NYU, but I don’t know if its CAS is worth paying so much more.

My parents want OU, obviously it’s cheaper. But one of my teachers who attended Harvard and teaches at my school (an academy of the arts) and a nearby college said that graduating from NYU would definitely land me a job, and that student loans are so manageable that something like 32k owed after graduation would amount to $110 a month (though that would be $110 a month for 25 years).

I’d just like some more outside opinions.
