Thoughts? (10 characters)

This one is really tough. Both are excellent schools! What major? I definately think if you go to Barnard you're going to get lots of individual attention (if you're the type of student who likes it) but the all women's thing isn't a big deal. Both colleges are in NYC and its impossible not to mean the opposite sex..

Wow, tough one.. I would go with NYU though.

OH! some girl mentioned this in a post a while back...she was actually transferring OUT of Barnard because she disiked it so much. If I recall, her reasons went like this:

*Sick of seeing girls 24/7
*Never had any fun
*I got the impression that she found the school kind of stuffy
*She could go days without seeing a male

Were your finaid packages pretty even? Had I gotten into Barnard, I still would have chosen NYU. I'm sure they both have the same opportunities...I know that NYU is more renown.

jaimelajolie, is NYU really more renowned?

... i wanna major in neuroscience (not sure if barnard even offers it)

NYU is more renown. While Barnard is affiliated with Columbia, not many people seem to know that. Besides, if you ask my honest opinion, I'd rather be competing against females AND males when trying to earn top grades and such--all-girls school seems to me as an easy way out.

I know NYU's got a neuroscience program.

NYU seems to be better placed for younger students anyway--you'll learn as much outside of class as in. Sabes?

Barnard does offer a Neuroscience and Behavior Major. You can either do a Cellular concentration or a Behavior concentration.

I found the thread I was talking about! #7 I think

I too am torn between NYU and Barnard. It's all I've been thinking about since I got in - I've been going back and forth each day. I was happy to see that I'm not alone. I want to be an English major and I know Barnard is known for their outstanding English department- especially writing. Plus, if i went there I would get a degree form Columbia University, which I thought could open a lot of doors. Academically I feel Barnard is superior;however, NYU's campus, dorms, and well its entire atmosphere seems far more attractive than that of barnards. I have no idea what to do right now. Do you have any thoughts?

Well, the girl DID say that Barnard's really bad at providing internships and such--NYU does an AMAZING job at that. And if you're going into writing? I'd think that having experience would mean more than where you got your degree...

if your in Manhattan and you don't have "experiences" it's your own fault. in more elite circles barnard has is more renowned, but in the general public NYU is simply more well known. i know a girl at barnard interning for maureen dowd. and the part about not seeing boys is simply WIERD, because again, if you are in manhattan and you don't leave your dorm, that's... bizzare. and barnard and columbia college students cross register for classes. lots of misconceptions about barnard here....
i think you have to be independent and smart at either school, and the difference is, for obvious reasons, NYU has a more funky, downtown vibe whereas barnard has more of the posh uptown vibe.

i disagree that nyu is more renowned. there's a difference between well-known and renowned.. nyu is quite well-known because it's huge and because its location is in its name - everyone knows it's in nyc. but barnard is far more renowned, being a historic seven sister.. nyu's reputation has only recently shot up.
nyu's freshman dorms are great, but that's because they have such a high proportion of freshmen who consider transferring that they give them the best dorms in order to entice them. upperclass housing isn't that great, and it's more expensive than barnard's.
also, i think that girl just had a bad experience. barnard is excellent at helping you find internships, as demonstrated by the vast majority of barnard students who have had at least one by the time they graduate. and i dont know why she never saw boys. i see boys all the time and i wish i didnt. and i leave campus for the city nearly every day, and i'm also aware than new york city is more than fancy townhouses and hip bars.. which i'd never get the sense of, living in the village.
finally, you're not exactly "competing" against the people in your class, so i dont know why it matters that you're with only girls instead of both girls and boys. it's a moot point anyway because you DO take classes with guys. barnard is just so much more empowering for women.

at nyu however 80 percent of students have three internships or more by the time they graduate
