NYU vs. BU...

Yeah that's basically what I'm trying to decide between. I am actually visiting BU tommorow, but right now I have a feeling this is going to be a tough choice.
Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of each? I already visited NYU and loved it.

Yes, I know replies may be biased, but that's what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Essentially these are both schools that are completely immersed in the atmosphere of the city. Aside from the slight academic edge at NYU, i thnk your decision should be based on what city you see yourself living in for the next four years.

Is this serious? are you actually considering BU?

I would choose NYU in a second.

yes i know NYU has more prestige... and may just be a better overall school.

I guess this is a NYC vs. Boston issue... they are really different cities that I both just visited (from California). Is the difference in quality that great (serious question)?

NYU is seriously better and nyc is a better city as well

if anyone could give me good reasons why, i'd be sold

i love boston but i think NYU is a lot better academically, with the exception of BU's medical school which is really difficult to get into.

NYU hands down. I have a lot of friends at BU, and one of them even said that most kids at BU are the kids at applied to NYU but didn't get in so opted for a "in and of the city" type school like BU.

So if you want reasons
Academically: NYU> BU in so many departments.
Regionally: NYC> Boston
Aesthetics: At least there isn't a freeway running from NYU like there is at BU

BU is a diluted version of NYU.

I liked both NYU and BU when I went to visit. It just so happened that NYU gave me more money. So I forgot about BU. :)

That being said, attending NYU's been one of the best decisions in my life. I've been able to do some really cool things here. That's not to say that I couldn't have done those things at BU, but who knows?

Visit BU and see what feeling you get from the environment. That should help you make up your mind.

i have this exact same diliemma. I visited NYU two days ago and BU today and so far the list of pros/cons I've complied is as so:

NYU
pros:
1. NYC is awesome shopping & everything
2. essentially everything is clustered around Washington Square
3. great interships & study abroad opportunities
4. students seem more cultured & intellectual
5. dorms are v. big & nice
cons:
1. hard to disconcern the college studnets from the new yorkers
2. NYC can be intimidating
3. no school spirit or sports

BU
pros:
1. Boston is a very managable city
2. FENWAY!
3. Beautiful greenery around the charles
4. students seem friendlier & more school pride
5. the brownstone dorms are gorgeous
cons:
1. dorms aren't that nice
2. campus is very spread out along the charles
3. classes are enormous (150 ppl in lectures!)
4. not as good as NYU academically

that's the list so far for me. I think i'm leaning towards NYU, probably like 80/20. hope that helped!

Eh, you get used to NYC. I actually don't like Boston as much - it's so much easier to get around in New York... Yeah, pretty much all the cons for NYU, you get used to, so they aren't a big deal.

BTW, some classes at NYU are 150 students too, but generally only intro classes.

ahhh i (was) in the same boat as you until i visited both. basically what it comes down to is this. for large city, boston is small. i met up with kids in boston and they love it, don't get me wrong, but they all said that they feel as though they have done everything the city has to offer in 1-2 years. new york city however is (in my eyes) a microcosm of the world, and (in my opinion as well as my brothers, and friends etc) new york NEVER runs out of things. im pretty sure that in general terms of grandeur and activities NYC>Boston.

HOWEVER!
boston is much cleaner (fresh air!)
you can't beat the chowder
boston has that "small city" feel in the big city which is what some people want
boston is scaled nicely (not like NYC, where you feel like an ant)
boston is called the college city of the US for a reason.
i am positive that BU's fin. aid is better than NYU's (seeing how NYU has the worst)

however^2!

i visited bu and didn't get a very good vibe from it in general. the charles is gorgeous but it just.....rubbed me the wrong way? i hated the fact that
1) there is the highway through campus
2) the T cuts Comm ave in half (annoying as hell)
3) the T itself is annoying as hell when its above ground. it moves SO slow. very inefficient. (but prettier than NYC's)

"Is this serious? are you actually considering BU?"

Why does that come as such a surprise? Because NYU is higher in the rankings? You know, it's not like someone's considering a terrible school over Harvard. I was accepted to both NYU and BU (no difference in the overall cost for me), and chose BU.

so why'd you choose BU? Do you like it there?

Me? Because I liked the description of the Honors program, and because my Mauritian friends who have studied in the U.S thought I would like Boston more than New York. I suppose the choice was somewhat instinctive as well - I just felt myself leaning more towards Boston U.

If you tell us major, we'd help you out a bit more.

I was thinking about either East Asian Studies or International Business.

The IB at Stern is one of the best in the country. Though it's a comajor so you'd have to major in an additional subject. East Asian Studies I would assume is pretty much the same everywhere?
