NYU vs. Emerson ??? Help

Hello to all who can help,

We are down to the wire...
My D has to make a decision between NYU/Tisch and Emerson college - both BFA programs.. Any experience and / or recommendations will be welcome.
She has visited both, though her NYU visit was brief due to schedule conflicts, she was not impressed by the accepted students orientaion. (Maybe she was having a bad day ?)
Any thoughts?
Thank you,
ltd-mom

what studio at NYU?

NYU/Strasberg

You really need to ask yourself a series of questions and/or think about some ideas
in no particular order of importance

1) does your D know anything about the methods and or tools taught under strasberg? Does she like it? Is she okay with mainly focusing on that method of study? I personally am not a fan of it but everyone approaches acting in a different way…
2) Location… with either program they are not really going to encourage auditioning… they’ll probably actually frown on it. So your vicinity to NYC and the acting business isn’t really that big of a plus.( someone can argue with that but thats what I’ve gathered) But you can get accustomed to the city slowly being at NYU… so its not that big of a jump when you start living there after college. Where does she feel more at home? Boston or NYU… Boston is a really cool city and isn’t as intense of NYC
3) Cost… did either school offer you any financial aid?.. I know NYU is quite pricey and also that Emerson claims to be tight on giving out cash
4) Gut feeling… Have you visited both campuses and sat in on classes?
both programs are great so disregard ranking. Where does your daughter feel like she can excel the best as an actress and enjoy herself while doing it. You have to like where you live and your environment or else your work will suffer.

there is no miracle program… great actors can come out of various programs… and great actors have come out of programs that wouldnt even be on the “TOP 20” bfa acting schools
with either school you are gonna have the resources

your daughter just needs to decide which set of resources she prefers

Nick’s Point #1 is very important. When we were researching the Stella Adler Studio at Tisch we were told by a couple of people associated with the studio that they don’t only teach the Adler Technique there…they also incorporate other approaches to acting instruction.

Probably at the Strasberg Studio there is a lot more going on than just Lee Strasberg’s “Method.” (It is my impression that the Method no longer has the same status in the professional community that it once had.)

It would be a good idea to find out as much as possible about the training at the Strasberg Studio by close questioning of people in the know.

Did she decide?

It is May 1 after all!!

I know… don’t leave us in the dark!

itd-mom this is beginning to get cruel

Thank you for all your input.
She chose NYU! :-)

Very good choice, imo, if your daughter is interested in being a working actor. Good luck to her! I wish more kids would come back to CC and post about their experiences in a particular studio—although I can understand why they wouldn’t want to publicly share their “lows.” But I personally would love to hear about the “highs” of her experience, itd-mom. And congratulations to both of you :)
