Other than the obvious difference of price, any thoughts on why one school may be a better choice than the other?

I’ve heard Marymount has very little opportunities to perform, but I can’t verify that. In general though I’m pretty sure NYU is more highly regarded, by a lot.

I would guess, and this is unscientific, so someone may want to check, that the academic bar is higher in the liberal arts courses at NYU. Now, I could be wrong about that, because I don’t know much about Marymount Manhattan other than it does have a wonderful BFA program.

The one that is “better” is the one that your D wants to attend. That’s how she should pick, in my opinion.

She should list everything she has thoroughly researched about every aspect of each school and examine these two lists side by side and compare/contrast. This should include her pros and cons about each one. As well, she should examine each aspect of each school and see how it compares with her own personal selection criteria and preferences. In other words, if she has a size preference, which school closely matches that? And so on. That should make it much clearer. The school that most closely aligns with her selection criteria is the one to pick. Add in visits to each and some gut feelings of which feels like a good fit.

I am not going to take the time to compare these schools (your D needs to do that)…but just for starters…one is a major university and one is a small college (and certain kids may want one of the other of those types of schools). One is a BFA and one is a BA with a MT Minor (compare the curricula). One is considered more selective artistically when it comes to odds of admission, along with the OVERALL applicant pool. NYU is far more selective academically than MM and that may or may not matter to a certain kid and the level of academic challenge in the classroom and level of peer group. Examine the production opportunities at each one. I could go on and on but these are just a smattering of things to examine about each and how they contrast and how one matches with one’s own preferences in what they want in a college.

My post went up out of sequence and was written AFTER NotMamaRose’s post.

Thanks for all of your quick replies. My daughter at this point in her life can think of nothing else other than mt. She has always done very well in school; it comes easy to her. That said, her main focus at this point is to get the best possible mt training. We have talked about all of the things each of you have brought up and she realizes the academic bar is probably lower in the liberal arts area for Marymount-- she is simply focussing on where she can get “the best training” and can’t wait for next year to be here already. She is leaning toward NYU as far as size and the liberal arts end of it, but as I said, MT is her main focus. We have looked at Marymount’s program, but it is hard to compare until we see her studio.

Thanks again for the input.

If MT is her main focus…you need to put the curriculums side by side because Tisch is a BFA curriculum and MM is a BA with a MT Minor. See how they compare.

I realize you do not yet know her Tisch studio and that will be a factor as well. Didn’t she do CAP summer program though? If she did, I just feel that it is more likely she will land in CAP, than not. Just a guess.

Another thing…even if MT is her main focus, it is just a fact that at both schools, she will have to take SOME academics and since she has to, she may as well examine that aspect of each school.

No. My d. did the Carnegie Mellon pre-college program. I agree since she has to do the liberal arts at both school she should explore what those options will be. At this time, I think NYU would be the wiser choice from the liberal arts aspect. However, Marymount said they would give her all of her dual enrollment credits, but NYU will examine them once she gets there. If she goes the Marymount way, I think she could most definitely double major (which I like). I’m not so sure about NYU. But as I said, she is really only thinking about the MT aspect.

If she’s assigned to CAP21, this should be an easy decision.

Even if she just thinks about the MT aspect and NO other aspect of each college…one is a BFA and one is a BA where MT is a Minor. I think there will be differences. I have a former client in that program and I recall her telling me about freshman year and what she was taking and it was not like what a CAP student would have taken.

I just went back to a letter she had written me at this point last year during her freshman year and she was enjoying MMC but one thing she did not like was the lack of performance opportunities. Please do not go by this one comment but rather examine the performance opportunities between your D’s two colleges and find out what you can.

We plan on weighing each program and comparing each. Thanks for any insights that have been given.

Just to chime in-my D is at MMC as a musical theater minor and she has been very happy with the school and training.
Of course, they are both wonderful choices- and they both have a great location!(NYC)
It really comes down to personal choice- as Soozievt was saying- size of college, curriculum, finances and most important where your d feels that she could be happiest at-Congrats on great acceptances to decide between!

You can do a search on both schools websites and look at the curriculum and each required course or at least descriptions of courses needed. NYU Cap 21 shows a description of each semester and MMC actually has the catalog.
