for economics...which one do you suggest? i'm in a complete dilemma now. both look equally enticing. thing that put me off is NY cost of living, but in Michigan i heard job prospects not very promising.

Are you serious? What makes you think you need to stay in Michigan if you go to Michigan?

Michigan Econ > NYU Econ without honors.

Michigan honors is a clear choice if all else is equal (fitting environment, etc)

Banedon, roughly 50% of Michigan graduates work in the Northeast when they graduate and a large chunk head out West. I'd say only a quarter of Michigan students stay in Michigan...and that's a personal choice. In terms of plain Economics, both Michigan and NYUY are excellent. From personal experience, I can tell you that Michigan's Econ program and faculty is very undergraduate-intensive, which is unusual for a large research institution. In terms of overall college experience, Michigan has much more to offer than NYU. However, some students do not like the traditional undergraduate experience. Many would rather just go to class and do their own thing afterhours.

Michigan LSA Econ>NYU CAS Econ
Michigan LSA Honors Econ> NYU CAS Econ
Michigan Ross Econ>>>NYU CAS Econ
Michigan LSA Econ=NYU Stern Econ
Michigan LSA Honors Econ>NYU Stern Econ
Michigan Ross Econ>NYU Stern Econ
Michigan LSA Honors Econ>NYU CAS Honors Econ
Michigan LSA Honors Econ=NYU Stern Honors Econ...

The verdict is in: UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN.

Michigan. (10 characters)

Uni of Michigan LSA Honors.

Again, though, it depends on what you prefer in terms of setting, location, school feel. Yeah, Michigan is huge, but it does have sport teams and games students attend, which is more than I can say for NYU. Is that important to you?

Ann Arbor and NYC are both fab college towns, but I'd go for Ann Arbor because 1) cost and 2) "feel" of it.

haha i just realised what a dumb question it was after i posted it.

ihateCA, thanks for the info. things like these we internationals never knew about. :)

may i ask how did you come to that conclsuion? (not trying to question your statement or anything). alex? :)

My neighbor is an econ professor at U of M. The Econ dept. at Michigan is arguably one of the best in the nation

It's a combination of rankings (which plays a very small part actually), the prestige of the institution, quality of the program and the peer reputation. The University of Michigan is the most respected state university in the country, only out-respected by UC Berkeley. On top of that, the prestige and opportunities that a University of Michigan BA brings to your resume is pretty much unparalleled (if you take the ivies out of the equation).

Well, I was going to put in my two cents, but uh...there seems to be a verdict. I'm an honors economics major at the University of Michigan and the department's great, the advising is the best I've seen here at Michigan, and it's not too hard to get an A because you're in class with all the b-school rejects.

okay my mom freaked out when i told her this statement becasue it sounds like it U M is such a terrible school. i don't know how to explain to her now.

chibearsfan, clarfiy please.

Banedon, I think what Banedon meant is that since only 50% of Ross applicants get in, the remaining 50% usually major in Economics. However, many Econ majors, like Chibears and myself, could probably have gotten into Ross but never applied because we went to Michigan with the intent to major in Economics.

I'd pick Michigan

if i was the one deciding, i would DEFINITELY take Michigan.

Michigan has a much better econ program for both graduate and undergraduate and the Ross School of Business at Michigan is ranked a few spots higher than NYU's stern. NYU in my opinion is a highly overrated school while michigan, for being a state school, is highly underrated.

Michigan also has possibly the best alumni network in the nation, better graduate placements from what i have heard, and even a better football team! (or any team)

However, one issue at michigan is certainly its overall size and lack of academic advising so if those are major negatives to you then give NYU some thought. Otherwise, go Big Blue!

Nachman, NYU is roughly the same size as Michigan. I believe Michigan has 24,000 undergads and NYU has 20,000 undergrads.

okay. i signed up to be a Wolverine this morning. :D this may sound like a stupid question, but are there any merit scholarships? not for incoming, but during studies there. second year or something.

Econ 315= mother of all killers
