Career Goal: Summer IB Analyst Internship followed by Investment Banking Analyst Offer

Here are my preferences, correct me if I’m wrong:

  1. NYU (Best recruiting on campus and brand recognition in NY and nationally) T2. Villanova (Good recruiting on campus, plus the alumni base is excellent) T2. Indiana ( I know that I would be an auto admit at Indiana, but it's IB workshop is phenomenal. It has a 95% job placement rate in investment banking, corporate banking, and corporate finance)
  2. UNC Chapel Hill ( In-State Student, Don't Know if I'll get in, my brother goes there, the reason why I put it as Number 4 is that it's brand recognition for a prospective banker is OKAY. It has tremendous impact for banking in Charlotte and Gerogia, but is essentially dead on Wall Street if you rely on On Campus Recruiting. Yes, it does have a way better alumni base and brand value overall than Indiana and Villanova, but networking can only get you so far when your competing against thousands of Kenan Flager Student for alumni interviews)

Please correct me if I’m wrong about the above rankings, and PLEASE CHANCE ME.

UNC Chapel Hill: a match school (somewhat low acceptance rate but you make a viable candidate)
NYU: my friend last year got a full scholarship there with stats higher but not tooo much higher than yours so I’d say you have a reasonable/good chance
Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1952661-unviersity-of-virginia-chances.html#latest

I thought I would have easy chance into UNC because I’m in state 49%

You think Indiana and Villanova are targets for Wall Street ibanking? Indiana is okay, villanova is just bad. Those two should be at the bottom, then UNC, and then NYU would be the best. I agree that UNC wouldn’t be the ideal location, but I have a lot of friends who work on Wall Street now.

Better yet if you really want to do Wall Street ibanking you should go to one of the ivies i.e. Wharton.

@Carolinahbrahh, is there really a big OCR presence specifically targeting Corporate Banking and IB. I mean, Suntrust and Merill Lynch has presence in addition to the boutiques in Charlotte, but what about BB. Also, if I take Villanova out of the picture, wouldn’t the excellent placement rate in the IB Workshop at Kelly be a pull factor. However, I feel like NYU is my best bet, would you agree?

So:

  1. NYU
  2. Chapel Hill
  3. Indiana

Out of the Picture: Villanova

Are you absolutely sure Villanova is awful for its sticker price, and do you think I’ll be accepted to NYU?

Indiana should be a safety for you

But @tigerman333 many people are saying that Indiana isn’t that good even though it has a really good workshop program. My guidance counselor and essentially everyone on WSO is saying that even though the rankings from 2014 by Wall Street Oasis says that Indiana has much much better recruiting than Chapel Hill. You should check it out.

That’s interesting. I applied there and it is my backup. Everyone I have talked to said that it has a very strong program. While Wall St. recruiting may not be the best, a lot of NY companies recruit for their Chicago offices there, for example Goldman Sachs

Tigerman333 So it doesn’t have strong Wall Street recruiting

None of those schools do quite frankly

And yea I know people from UNC who now work at Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley

Wait a minute, I thought NYU was known universally for its IB Receuiting

Do you guys suggest any other schools

http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/list-of-targets-and-semi-targets

NYU is a target, the rest are semis. I personally don’t recommend Indiana/Villanova. If I were you, I would take the in-state at UNC, unless your parents don’t mind the money sending you top IB feeder program. Stern is cut-throat and NYC is hella expensive.

Maybe try for UMich, if you’re willing to apply to Ross after your freshmen year.

I think that you are underestimating UNC. I have a number of friends here and in NYC that are UNC grads. What you should do is get an internship one summer in Charlotte with BOA or WF and then try to use that experience to move to NYC either with them or with another bank after graduation. Lots of people do it this way.

So:

  1. NYU (equal reputation to Michigan)
  2. Chapel Hill (target for Charlotte, semi target for NY)
  3. Indiana (good workshop but not many opportunities)
  4. Villanova (not worth it)

Also, what do you think my chances are with Chapel Hill, IN STATE

I don’t think you’ll have any problem getting into Chapel Hill instate and don’t know why you’d choose any of the other options over UNC with instate tuition.

It’s just that the proximity to Wall Street and monthly opportunities whether they are for summer positions or yearly positions seems to outweigh against Chapel Hill. Plus the 5 week winter break would feel good. While it may be cutthroat, it is a fact that many stern undergrads end up in an IB Position than a tarheel

@FedMaster

Sure, more kids from stern go into IB, but literally everybody in the program is gunning for the same positions. It’s competitive, unhospitable, and cut-throat. Read about people’s experiences at Stern… honestly, it doesn’t sound too great, esp. with the cost of NYC.

Though it’s true that UNC isn’t a top target, when we’re talking about placing for IB/PE/HF, it’s hard regardless of where you go. Network network network, and I’m sure that you’ll do fine. If money isn’t a big issue for you, try for UMich or UVa (quite a bit harder OOS looking at your stats).

Honestly, I would forget IU and Nova. I’m not even in-state at NC, but I’m pretty sure I would have chosen UNC over IU and Nova given the option.
