NYU vs Syracuse vs UMD

So, I'm looking to do something in journalism, in particular print/online journalism (essentially the writing aspect, not broadcast) and am completely torn between these 3 schools. I'm big into sports and would love a school with big time athletics (which only NYU doesn't have) but I also would like to be near or in a city. I definitely want to study abroad, and would prefer a school strong in things besides journalism if I were to choose something else.
Money is about the same for each school, and all 3 are nowhere near where I live (west coast).

NYU
PROS: In NYC, so all the nightlife, food, internship, random events that are offered there. Great academics, nice facilities, great study abroad options, must be a double major in the journalism program so I would explore other interests.
CONS: Student body isn't similar to me like SU or UMD, no school sports/spirit whatsoever, not much of a campus, little community, journalism program not as strong as others

SU
PROS: Awesome journalism program that is respected through and through, student body I can see myself with, huge sports/school spirit, traditional college campus, from what I can tell great study abroad, smaller than the other schools, journalism program requires a minor in something else which I like.
CONS: Not a very good location at all, not sure how strong programs besides journalism are, j school seems more for broadcast journalism, food/facilities/location etc. not as good as the others.

UMD
PROS: Great journalism program that is more writing focused, great location next to DC, gorgeous campus, big time sports and school spirit, all the offerings of a traditional college, great facilities, internship opportunities in DC
CONS: Journalism program possibly not as good as SU's, not sure how academics are besides journalism program, nor do I know about their study abroad, more of a number than at the other schools

HELP

Syracuse if you are ready for snow from October till you get out of school in May.

funnily enough, I have a friend who was deciding between Syracuse and Maryland who wants to go into sports broadcasting. He didn’t even consider NYU because it has non-existent athletics. NYU does have an okay journalism department. Something you might want to consider is that NYU has the Robert Tisch School of Sports Management, which might appeal to you.

You probably know this by now, but NYU has horrible school spirit. The big question aside from academics is whether school spirits/sports teams is big for you. You have to decide whether nightlife/city life is more important to you than sports/athletic programs. Syracuse is consistently in the Top 10 nationally for basketball, and is a machine for professional players (Jonny Flynn, Carmelo Anthony, Donte Greene, Hakeem Warrick). There’s also competitive football as well. They’re in the bottom of the Big East, but they’re not awful. Maryland is generally competitive in the ACC for both football and basketball. Torrey Smith, wide receiver, is probably going in the 1st or 2nd round of the NFL Draft. Gives you an idea as to what type of athletes you can meet there. Darrius Heyward-Bey also went 7th overall to the Raiders in the 1st round a couple years ago, so this isn’t just a one time thing. Both schools aren’t bad at some other sports (baseball, lacrosse, etc…)

Also, ESPN reporters Bonnie Bernstein, Tim Kurkjian, and Scott Van Pelt all graduated from Maryland. Also, Bob Costas, Len Berman, Sean McDonough, and Mike Tirico all graduated from Syracuse. You can make it big in sports from Syracuse or Maryland.

I would say base your decision off of whether getting real times sports experience is important to you. If it is then go to Syracuse or Maryland. I would probably pick Syracuse because of Newhouse Journalism in terms of pure academics, but you seem to prefer the city/internships so then I would probably choose Maryland.

Finally, regarding NYU, if you are okay not getting big time experience at the Division I level, but would be willing to trade it in for the city/nightlife, then pick NYU because the city can’t be matched, especially for network gigs for sports (YES Network, MSG, SNY, and the major cable providers ABC, NBC, FOX Sports).

I can totally see why sports would be important to you because you would get that experience at Syracuse or Maryland. Most of my friends who want to do some type of sports journalism like to go to schools with sports teams, but that’s probably because they’re sports fanatics who are into school pride and bragging that their team won.

Best of luck on your decision :)

While I can accept the idea of NYU not having any teams to brag about, it’s more that the kids there wouldn’t really be into sports regardless of their school or not that is the problem. Because I think the oppurtunites offered by each school in journalism are similar in that UMD and SU have great programs, and NYU has a decent program but is in such a good location for internships and stuff, it becomes more of a question of the school outside academics. I guess I just feel that I would kick myself for not going to NYU for all it has to offer, but then again I’d be missing out four years of living on a campus with kids my age like a traditional college. Damnit this is tough haha

Yeah, but you do have to consider that since NYU is so big (21,000 undergraduates) that even though the majority of people might not know a lot about sports, you’re going to find your group of friends to talk/debate sports with so I don’t think that will be a big issue.

Syracuse and Maryland both offer that tailgating kind of atmosphere where every Saturday morning you get up and go out to the fields for football games. If that’s the type of college experience you envision, then go to one of these.

But if the city is more desirable to you and you’d rather wake up every day walking through Soho and Greenwich Village with an active environment, then go to NYU. It really depends on how important the city is to you.

I would say consider UMD. When I went to visit the campus is gorgeous ACC sports are huge on campus. They have a great journalism programs similar to Syracuse but maybe not as well known. They built a fairly new building for the journalism school at UMD. The internships and opportunities in DC are extraordinary and if your into sports journalism you have the wizards, capitals, redskins, and nationals right in DC. Plus you have the ravens and orioles right in baltimore. Also if you choose you want to do something other than journalism UMD has ranked pretty well in most majors and will provide a great overall education probably better than Syracuse which is most well known for Newhouse. I mean what can beat going to a basketball game in the comcast center and watching your team take on Duke and Unc. So consider UMD but honestly you cannot go wrong with any of the three schools.

thanks everyone. I think that ultimately I want a true college experience, and that NYU’s biggest draw to me is not the school, but the city, which I can live in if I want to AFTER school, but I won’t get the oppurtunity to live on a campus again. As far as UMD v Maryland, I’m leaning towards Maryland for a couple reasons. Location is much better, weather (I don’t mind the extreme cold, but I do want seasons), and SU is more of a broadcast J school where as UMD is more print/newspaper (these days I guess online) J school, which is what I’m more interested in.
