I am a student(out of state for U of Mich) who is interested in the schools in the title. I know that the two school have very programs in many different areas. For economics program(LSA or CAS), which college would be better?

My spec is
3.95 unweighted
30 ACT
6 AP classes + 1 college course
Good essays
(Did not read recs)

average EC
No working experience
App. 100 hours of community service in high school career
Ethnicity - Asian

Please be specific than just saying "Michgan is better because it starts with an 'M'." Thank you very much~! :)

Both have excellent Econ departments. I'd say Michigan's Econ department may be a tad stronger, but not enough to justify chosing it over NYU if you personally prefer NYU's overall atmosphere better than Michigan's.

I am not sure I agree with you on that one Forgiven. I agree that Stern is almost as prestigious as Ross. However, NYU as a whole is not as prestigious as Michigan.

East Coast bias doesn't apply in this case (it certainly would if we were comparing Michigan to the Ivies or UVa or Georgetown though). Michigan has a huge presence, particularly in NYC. I agree that to many high school students, NYU is more appealing than good old Midwestern Michigan! But in terms of actual prestige and reputation, Michigan has the edge over NYU. Fiske gives Michigan a ***** academic ranking compared to NYU's **** and the USNWR peer assessment score for Michigan is 4.5/5.0 or 4.6/5.0 compared to 3.8/5.0 or 3.9/5.0 for NYU.

I spent a semeseter of my junior year in Jersey and even there, Michigan was the more respected school than NYU (although I had never even thought of NYU as an "elite" school until that spring.)

If you can find me a major ranking that has Stern ranked ahead of Ross, feel free to share it with us. Even in Finance, which is far and way Stern's strongest sub-department, Stern's edge over Ross is insignificant. Just look at how many BBAs the major IBs hire from Ross on an annual basis and how much they pay them. I'd say the numbers compare favorably with Stern. And at Ross, Finance is not quite as strong as General Management and Marketing.

I looked at both Stern and Ross. I can't imagine not having a preference for one over the other after visiting both campuses. The feel is totally different. I thought I wanted to live in NYC, but decided I wanted a "real" college experience with all the fixin's. However, I would like to work (at least intern) in NYC, but this is the only chance I'll have to have the "full deal" undergraduate experience. You won't get that at Stern.

US News Undergrad
Finance:
2) NYU
4) Michigan

Insurance:
8) NYU
Michigan not listed.

International Business:
2) NYU
3) Michigan

In certain areas, NYU is ranked above Michigan depending on who you ask, but the differences are insignificant. When comparing the schools overall, you will find that Ross is repeatedly ranked above Stern, but not by much. In US News, Ross is at #3 and Stern is at #5. In the Business week rankings, Ross is #6 and Stern is #7. This information is not enough to base one's decision on, and I would consider the schools equal, as 1 or 2 places isn't saying much. It's like looking at the US News University rankings and saying Princeton is better than Yale because it is ranked 2 above it. Base your decision on preference, financial aid, major, etc.

However, the OP's question was regarding Econ, in which case I'd probably choose Michigan.

Both are amazing, like what everyone else has said, it's like splitting hairs. NYU has the amazing city on it's side, while Michigan just... is Michigan (in the good sense, not the bitter my god why is it so cold sense)

In my mind, I'm gonna go for both and basically pick the one that accepts me (if any).

And since you're out of state, the price is roughly the same, I think NYU is still higher...
