is there even a question of which i should go to?

Last year, it was between NYU Stern Scholar and UChicago Econ for my family. Additionally, there were a few more other options which included 3 ivies. The final decision is: UChicago.

We think we've made right decision.

Definitely UChicago. The quality of academics cannot even be compared. And downtown Chicago is marvelous. There is nothing like NYC but there is nothing quite like a UChicago education either. It really commands respect.

I'd go to Chicago.

I would definitely go with Chicago and I disagree with Jimbob about NYC. NYC is a decent city, but it does not compare to the great European cities like Paris or London. In North America, I give Chicago and Montreal higher marks.

U of Chicago ,
but
if ur not up for the challenge and extremely intellectual lifestyle
then nyu

I agree with Alexandre. NYC does not compare with the great European cities. But that still doesn't mean I am wrong when I say, There is nothing quite like NYC. It is unique. Not the best, but still unique.

As much as I love NYC (and Montreal and Chicago are just not in the same league in terms of business appeal and NYC is clearly superior in the arts and theater offerings) and appreciate your interest in the Big Apple, this comparison is not close. U Chicago is the winner in every category and usually by a substantial margin. A better comparison might be U Chicago and Columbia. If you are a competitive applicant to U Chicago, then you likely would be competitive as well at Columbia. Is there a reason why you consider NYU instead of Columbia?

Academic rep-wise and quality of student-body, UoC is the way to go.

Campus-wise, UoC has the classic English gothic architecture, but it is an oasis (Hyde Park) in an otherwise not so great Southside of Chicago (access to the lakefront is also nice).

NYU doesn't really have set campus (not surprising since it recently was more of a commuter school) with a mishmash of architecture set on various city blocks. NYU has been on building spree, esp. with regard to student housing (tho the new "dorms" are a bit scattered with some being more than a few blocks away from the main parts of campus).

City-wise, NYC is a great city with tons to do. Specifically, GV is a fun neighborhood, but the "mall-ification" of GV, as well as the rest of Manhattan, is annoying. And while the city has been cleaned-up considerably since the early 90s, one still gets propositioned by drug dealers around Wash. Square Park. The one caveat - NYC can wear on a person.

Chicago is also a very fun city and is a bit more manageable than NYC. There are plenty of bars, niteclubs, concert venues, museums, etc. to keep one occupied. The lakefront, esp. during the summer is great (Chicago's neighborhood festival/block party scene during the summer is better than NYC's) - there aren't too many places where one can lay out on the beach/play volleyball with skyscrapers as a backdrop.

Overall, Chicago is a bit underrated and if it was located on one of the coasts, imo, would rival SF. Chicago is also a bit cleaner and quite a bit more affordable than NYC.

thanks so much for your responses! uchicago is def the clear choice for me, and you all solidified it.

hawkette, columbia was actually me #1 choice, and i got waitlisted :/ but uchicago was pretty much my second choice, and i'll be VERY happy to attend!
