Hey everyone! I'm an Asian American, female, high school junior from New Jersey in the middle of the whole college freak out season. Recently, my guidance counselor told me NYU was a pretty safe choice for me...I love it there a lot and was planning on applying ED. However, there's something about UCLA that really interests me. I have 2 questions:

Is it harder to get into UCLA out of state than it is to get into NYU? I've looked up stats and stuff for UCLA but I understand it's easier to get in for students from California, so the numbers probably won't help me. In addition, there are a lot of Asians in California so it's probably even more difficult for me to get in.

Which school is better for scientific research? I'm planning on majoring in either Biology or Biochemistry, and I've been told many times that undergraduate research is the most important factor in getting into graduate school, so this is very important in deciding where to go.

I will appreciate any sort of response...thank you in advance!

UCs don’t factor race into admission decisions. In terms of UCLA vs. NYU in terms of difficulty getting in - I have friends (CA residents) who got into NYU but were denied from UCLA. In my opinion, UCLA has a more competitive applicant pool than NYU, for either in-state or out-of-state applicants.

NYU isn’t known as being strong in the sciences. If you’re set on biology and want to head to CA consider LA, Berkeley, or Davis for their biology programs.

also, nyu is over 30% asian, so it doesnt really get much higher than that

NYU is a private univ, so instate/out of state has no effect in their decisions.

UCLA is harder to get into than NYU. The reason colleges like NYU, and USC (I’m just using a similar applicant number) have such LOW admission rates is because everybody applies there. People just apply, apply, apply to every college they can (myself included), to help better their chances.

There are UC’s that are over 50% asian, though UCLA’s closer to 40%. NYU is under 20%. asian.

UCLA is actively looking for OOS students as they need the $$. Realize you’ll get no aid there but NYU is not much different.
