NYU vs UCSB?

Hi all,

I was pretty set on attending UCSB until just a few days ago, when I found out that I had been admitted into NYU! I am hoping to go into econ, and I would be majoring in econ and accounting at UCSB and econ ad NYU in the College of Arts and Sciences. I live in California, so the tuition for UCSB would be much cheaper than at NYU, but my parents would be willing to pay for NYU if I really wanted to go because NYU has a better national name.

However, I am worried that an econ major from NYU's CAS will be overshadowed by all the NYU sternies. I also feel like I would enjoy my time at UCSB more, partially because of the environment and because I would be having a more typical college experience as opposed to NYU's unique urban environment. Any thoughts?

At NYU, you will be looked down by Stern students and won’t have as much opportunities as Stern students. NYU also doesn’t have a central campus and lacks school spirit which can be problems when making friends but still possible. If you like freezing temperatures and a bunch of gay men, NYU is your choice.

Have you spent time in Isla Vista, the home and hangout of so many UCSB students? Not my personal taste, but I am a mother, not a student. Also, the UCSB campus has a bit of a decrepit and badly maintained look. I know that UCSB is really coming on strong in sciences and spending heavily in those areas, so would consider for those majors. Of course, NYU has problems too, as stated above. Why don’t you try to talk to a professor/student in the econ. dept. at UCSB?

i’ll be visiting both schools in two weeks, but i have a strong feeling i’ll prefer the laid back beach life of UCSB to the hustle and bustle at NYU.

anyone know about the strength of the econ programs at the two schools? I’m in the econ program in the college of arts and science at NYU, not in the stern school of business.

The SB experience is vastly different than hanging around Union Square. You need to think more about what and where you want to be after school. If you want to be doing finance/econ work in NYC, NYU will help a ton more than SB. If you want to stay around SoCal, SB might be the way to go. NYU definitely is the higher ranked school but be shrewd in truly how much better it is. I know NYU people who didn’t really benefit as much as you’d think from it.

is the prestige of NYU going to be that much better than if i were to go to ucsb?

The big accounting firms all recruit at UCSB. When you visit see if you can get to the career center and ask some questions.

yeah i’ve heard the big four recruit a lot at ucsb! i’m definitely going to ask about job opportunities when i visit both schools. does anyone know what job prospects look like for a student at nyu majoring in cas instead of at stern? i’m afraid i’ll always be overshadowed by stern kids who will always get job offers over cas econ students like me.
