Hey,

I need some advice on whether to attend NYU or UC Santa Barbara. NYU has a slightly better education and seems like it would be a great experience ( I'm from California) but is extremely costly (also any advice on getting into the Presidential Scholars Program would be helpful). UCSB is beautiful and much cheaper, but the education isn't as good.

I'm having a hard time deciding so any help would be appreciated!

Do you plan on some sort of graduate school? If so, I’d suggest UCSB to save you some money.

I wouldn’t be so sure the education isn’t as good at UCSB. NYU is extremely overrated. It is not worth paying private school prices for. The only good thing about NYU is that you might get NYC internships. New York is a ridiculously expensive city. Save your dough!

Thanks for the replies:)
I do plan on going on to grad school. People have been telling me that NYU would look better on my resume and open more doors in the future so it’ll be worth the expense in the long run. Is it really worth the price (money is tight for my family, but we could pay for it if I attended)?

Chrsitine300 – if money is tight, the additional $27,000 or so to attend NYU per year will not be made up for in the slightly higher rated education at NYU. That’s $108,000 over the four years.

Do you want to ask your parents to take that chunk out of their retirement nest egg even if they are willing to make that sacrifice?

You’d be wise to take about a quarter of that $108,000 and figure out how to use it to network in your chosen field all through college.

I’ve also been advised to go to a two-year community college and then transfer. The only thing is that I really want the college experience and I’m anxious to get out of my city (there’s nothing to do here).

I was thinking about transferring after a year or two at UCSB, though I’ve heard that it’s difficult to get into non-UC colleges this way.

Advice would be greatly appreciated

UCSB is a top 45 school NATIONALLY. NYU is in the 30s. There is no real difference and UCSB is BETTER than NYU is MANY areas.

TO pass on a top 50 school in the country for COMMUNITY COLLEGE, is RIDICULOUS.

Be grateful for the opportunity to go to UCSB and that you live in CA where you have so many options for a stellar education.

I would go straight into UCSB. It is a very good school and some departments are tops and I’ve met people in top grad schools who went to UCSB. Just keep your focus and stay away from the ones who are just there to party. Pick your peoples.

NYU is good too, but hardly worth a huge difference in cost. It is nice to have a change of coasts, but I know Californians who were really miserable there. One hated the dorm and was lucky enough that her parents would rent her an expensive apartment.

Look for study abroad programs or doing some summer research to expand your horizons and build your resume for grad school.

This is a no brainer, I think. I hope you are not really considering going to a cc, now that you are accepted. The cc route should only be used when you can’t get in anywhere, or money makes it simply not an option for you to go right to a 4 year.

UCSB, unless the difference in cost isn’t that huge.
Also remember that the NYU campus (or lack thereof) is very different from the UCSB campus.

Thanks for the replies everyone! They were really helpful.
