NYU vs. UCSD (if cost does not matter)

I am in a great dilemma as to where to go between NYU and UCSD

I will be going into NYU as a pre-professional medical track and am probably going to major in economics. (~$35,000/year)
or
I will be going into UCSD as a human biology major. (~$20,000/year)

Right now, I am more curious as to which school would be better if money is not the factor since many people seem to discourage others from going to NYU because of the price.

Would you rather major in economics or human biology?

$15,000 x 4 = $60,000

That would just about cover the first year of Med School, so I would say that money is definitely a factor here.

Are you instate for UCSD? I definitely think both schools are great schools and both will be pretty competitive. I’d say (money aside) choose the one which is you feel you have the best fit in (UCSD has way more of a campus than NYU, and if you’re from Cali - getting used to the east coast could be a hit or miss if you haven’t spent a great deal of time out here). I also think since you are pre-med, having UCSD’s med school on campus for research purposes (and actually UCSD’s bio department is ranked in the top 10 in the country and has great research!!) is a lot better than the separation of NYU and NYU’s med school (but NYU still does offer a lot of research)

I think letting us know what state you’re a resident in will help. Since NYU/NYU med are private they will ultimately cost more than UCSD/UC system med schools (UCSD, UCLA, UCSF, UCD, and UCI). If you’re OOS for the UC system, then it’s a different story

I’m also not saying you’d go to the med school of the undergrad you choose, but if you get to know people within that school with research, etc. and since you already know the environment of the school it seems like a logical thing (and I personally know a lot of people who do this)

you could major in econ at UCSD, so that issue is not relevant.

“better” is a personal thing.

Both are great schools and neither will prepare you better for med school. So, do you want to live in Greenwich Village or in La Jolla (a nice, expensive suburb, surrounded by million dollar homes).

Not really. There are literally thousands of premeds at UCSD all competing for those slots. But NYC has a gazillion other places to work/research. UCSD has itself and Scripps, and that’s about it.

I say NYU but just because that’s MY dream school ;p

Yes, I live in California and has lived here for 7 years.

My parents seem to be willing to pay for tuition for me either way which gives me more of a dilemma compared to if I had to take a loan out. Sometimes I think giving myself a bit of change will provide me with more opportunities to explore and since my brother was in the UC Berkeley system for undergrad before, he is recommending me to go to a private university.

There is also an issue of if I have a plan B in case pre-med does not work out for me and which school would provide me with a better plan B.

UCSD is up there with Berkeley and Los Angeles. It is counted as a top UC. I don’t see any reason to turn it down if you are in-state. 60k is too big to ignore.
