Hey guys,

I am deciding between NYU's Steinhardt and UCSD! I plan to major in communication/econ. I also plan to go to grad school after 4 years of undergrad.

I think NYU's Steinhardt has a more prestigious name overall, however, is it possible for me to transfer to CLAS from Steinhardt? Because if it's extremely difficult, I might go to UCSD for I got into the main campus (Muir) already.

Cost is really not an issue. I'm out of state for UCSD so there's not too much of a difference.

Another thing that's been holding me back about NYU is that I'm really intimidated by the campus, which is pretty urbanized. I also prefer the Southern California atmosphere, culture, and weather a lot more!

Any opinions would be great! Thank you for your time :)

Do you want city life or more relax surburban?

Are your career plans on the east coast or wallstreet?

I really want to settle somewhere around LA.. right now, I'm rejected from UCLA and about to be rejected from USC.

I want a city life... but I absolutely LOVE California!

Is there such a big difference between UCSD and NYU that it'll be not wise for me to give up NYU for UCSD?

UCSD- beaches-science freak.

Go to UCSD then, it's economics program is still a top ranked. And if you want to live in CA, the in state tuition certainly is a lot less than NYU. I had a friend who to NYU over Berkeley, but mostly, because he wanted to work in finance.

UCSD is probably the better overall university. Both are ranked similar however. NYU is urban in New York City, while UCSD is sort of a mix between urban and suburban in La Jolla, which is technically in the city of San Diego but 12 miles from downtown San Diego. New York is the largest city in the country, San Diego is the seventh largest. It really depends on what your looking for. UCSD is extremely strong in the sciences, while NYU more in the arts such as Film, Communications etc. In San Diego you could choose to live urban by living downtown or more suburban by living in La Jolla. In New York you will likely live urban. I personally prefer the city life as well, but love the southern california beaches. San Diego would be a good fit for me as i could live the urban life downtown but have the sun and beaches as well. But New York offers many advantages as well. The nightlife and entertainment is excellent in both cities. In San Diego you have the Gaslamp District in downtown and Pacific Beach. In New York you got Manhatten, etc. The universities are ranked very similar, so it really comes down to a personal choice. UCSD is very strong in political science (top ten department), econ (top ten department) etc, while NYU is strong in communications. If you want to live/work on the west coast, i recommend UCSD, if you want to live/work on the east coast, i recomment NYU. I think you will find a nice mix of city life, beaches, and southern california atmosphere in San Diego. However, New York is also an amazing city. Have fun choosing. They are both excellent schools, congrats on your admissions. Best of luck.

yes San Diego is the 7th largest city in the United States. New York is the largest in the United States.
