NYU vs UMiami

Hey guys. I was admitted to both NYU and UMiami, and I’m having a really hard time choosing one of them. Here listed the specific pros and cons of each choice:

  1. NYU So I was admitted to the core program of liberal studies in NYU. This program basically require me to study interdisciplinary core courses for 2 years in 5 global sites of NYU and then transfer me to CAS if I 'm not doing too bad in the program.

Pros:
1.I got to choose between 5 locations from different countries and I really enjoy this freedom of choice. I’m planning to chose Florence cause I love the beautiful little town.
2. NYU has much better prestige and name recognition than UMiami
3. I could experience innovative interdisciplinary courses just like those in Cornell (although Cornell rejected me this morning), and during first two years I don’t have to declare a major or something; I could choose any courses or programs I wanted to study as long as it’s provided; and NYU provides lots of courses.

Cons:
1.NYU is so expensive! My mother has to sell our lovely vacation house to support me there.
2. I don’t know much about Florence actually, nor Italy language or culture. I just got flipped when I took the first glance of Florence. Those architectures are beautifullllllll. But language barrier is a big problem.
3.This core program is often looked down upon by other NYU students — some think only dummy who couldn’t get into CAS went to the program, and some even think that they are not part of NYU, just a NYU-related community college. These points don’t make sense given the fact that the program is part of NYU, but stereotypes do affect the program’s reputation negatively.

Okay, now let me list specific information about Miami.

I was admitted to the CAS of University of Miami (in the city Miami, not the oxford one) to study economic majors.

Pros:

  1. It gave me president scholarship. Oh I love it as much as I love money. 1.8w every year makes it 7.2w dollar in total, and that’s lots of money to save.
  2. Its tuition and living cost was already much, much cheaper than NYU (in NYU, a single extra credit means extra tuition). Now with the scholarship, we not only don’t have to sell our vacation house, but also save lots of money for investment or travel.
  3. I love Miami as much as I love Florence! I love the sea, the beach, the coconut trees. Miami is beatiful in a natural way and Florence is charming in a artistic way. So I really don’t know how to choose.
  4. I have a natural inclination towards schools that truly appreciate me. And UMiami’s offer of kindness was my life savior when I was frustrated by a bunch of other schools who refused me. I don’t know why, but rejecting its offer would make me feel really bad.

Cons:

  1. Again, prestige, ranking, and reputation. I don’t care about these much, but many people and firms care about, and I really need their approval for my future development.
  2. The scholarship agreement says “to study economics”. Though I applied for economic major, I still want to have more choices of future fields and possibilities. Miami seems to be less flexible on that, and I’m not sure whether I could receive scholarship if I decided to switch major.
  3. Students groups will be less strong academically, and I love to be among a group of classmates who have their exceptional talents from which I could learn from. Also, social connections in Miami would be weaker, like alumi group

Thank you so much for reading this far! Please advice me and add any valid points to the list. Anyone knowing more info about NYU core program and Umiami please leave a comment

U of Miami offers an array of study abroad opportunities, most of which are probably significantly less costly. Also, you will have your entire life to travel, and perhaps more funds to do so if you choose not to impoverish yourself for NYU’s benefit.

It is very common for students to change majors during college, so I would suggest that you talk with someone at U of Miami to determine what are the specific limitations of your scholarship – whether it is tied to major and if there is minimum GPA requirement.

I would choose UMiami over the Core Studies program. In my opinion, the price tag of NYU just isn’t worth it. Although, if you feel the college experience is worth it, go for it.
