NYU vs. UNC

I've heard the presitge and being the "dream school" of NYU for many Juniors and Seniors.

On the other hand, UNC's ranked in the first five top state-universities and i heared numerous programs being offered in the university to be ranked in top five, generally, as well.

In terms of overall performance and prestige taken into account, which do you think is better?

I am by no means an expert on these schools. That said, both are highly respected institutions. I would think your decision should be based more on the particular major being considered and what you desire in a location. NYU has the city and all it has to offer, but most definitely not a "college town" feel or experience. UNC has the nice campus, college town, better weather---totally different atmospheres--all depends on what you like.

i am a current freshman at NYU and looking to transfer to UNC for fall 07. so obviously i would go with unc.

NYC is an awesome place. and my professors at nyu have really been top notch. but that being said im not convinced the ever increasing price tag is worth it (increase of 5.5 % next year = almost 50k). its also true about the lack of community so you really have to work hard to make good friends. but i know people who love it here. I also think it depends where youre from. NY NJ and CT make up a big % of the population.

only you know how social you really want to be and how hard you will work at it. i really dont think you can go wrong with either school. let me know if you have specific questions.

Beware of NYU; tons of students transfer out.

I am also having to decide between UNC and NYU and would love to get peoples thoughts...

Thank you for sharing guys...

Love hearing all different stories and perspectives..

Anyone else???

Please pause and think about this for a moment:

1)UNC is ranked some 10 spaces higher than NYU by USNews
2)UNC is around 15% smaller and almost HALF the price (assuming you are 00S), if you are instate NYU is 7 times more expensive.

Conclusion: NYU is state school sized that has an expensive private school tuition. (to me this seems to be the worst of both worlds)

I really don't understand why NYU is a "dream school." I really think its "dream school" status is due solely to the fact that it is in New York City. I don't get it, please someone help me understand.

well obviously thats not true because there are almost 100 universities in New York City. and nyu really has alot going for it. on a whole UNC may be ranked higher by USNews, but for business, performing arts, film, etc... NYU can rarely be beaten. then if you add in the location and the possibilities from that location, you can start to see why its a popular school.

A friend's son was accepted to several very good schools--among them NYU, UNC, Duke, UVA and Cornell. He chose NYU, just graduated and was very happy with his choice. For him, the lure of the city was very big, also he is gay and felt the environment in NY was much more accepting, was also pre-law and enjoyed working on political campaigns of candidates there in the city.

Personally, I would prefer UNC--but I like a smaller city, better weather, more bang for my money....that is if major offered at both schools.

However, it is a very personal decision that no one can make for you.
