NYU vs UofC

Compared to University of Chicago:

Does NYU have a better social scene, better campus life, etc?

Are the courses hard at NYU, I heard in Chicago they are really hard?

If I want to go to a school where there is great campus/city life along with great academics which school would I go to? NYU or UofC?

Which school is harder to get into?

Which school would look best on an application to an ivy league law school?

thanks!

1.) Well, I suppose that depends on what you want out of your social life...I'd say Chicago has more campus life because it has more of a campus, but as far as a social scene in general goes...NYU's got all of New York.

2.) I've heard they're hard at both places, but Chicago's madcrazywicked intense, so probably not as? I can't give you any concrete information here, though.

3.) Either. Chicago and New York are great cities and both colleges are good academically--Chicago has more of an academic reputation and also more of a campus, though.

4.) No idea.

5.) Either would look fine, I'd say...

Regarding social life, im talking about making friends, good relationships, a gf etc....And of course partying. which college is better for that?

Chicago is supposed to be harder and will look great for applying to grad school. It also has a campus which NYU does not. However, you should have a great social life at NYU since the ratio of girls to boys is 60/40! And NYU is obviously a really good school, too.

Chicago overall is better than NYU. But if you break it apart in subcategories, both have their relative strengths and weaknesses. Chicago has the best or one of the best Economics departments in the world. NYU also has a highly respected Economics department, but not as decorated. NYU has Stern which kicks a** and Tisch which is very renowned. Courant Institute(Math Department) at NYU is one of the best in the country for Applied mathematics. Difficulty in getting depends on which school in the University you apply to. Chicago is quite difficult to get in. But as the years go by, its getting increasingly competetive to get in NYU. And if you want to go to a grad school after undergrad, you won't have any problem in doing so from NYU. NYU itself offers respected Grad schools in - Wagner and Stern. Chicago and NYU both offer a good social scene but no other city in the world can beat NYC. These are both very good schools and it depends on where you see yourself going. It doesn't matter where you go, as long you work hard, you will go far. good luck!

I've applied to both, so from what I know:

UChicago has a better campus life, again because they have a campus and they are a little bit south of downtown, Chicago so if you want to hit the city you need to take public transportation. They do have Hyde Park, but that's not like BIG TOWN city/CHICAGO. NYU is right smack dab in the middle of Greenwich Village, which is a neighborhood smack dab in the middle of New York City. Judge for youself. And in terms of social scene...it depends. You can still have a social scene on campus, or off campus. But I would say UChicago has less of a social scene. Kids are normally more geeky there, and study more.

Again, I'm not attending NYU as of now so I wouldn't know accurately, but UChicago has a major writing curriculum. They emphasize writing in a lot of their things, and just in general UChicago's curriculum is very intense. Some say the school's an Ivy League without the attitude. But NYU's classes are not easy. CAS and Stern are highly competitive. Their professors, I'm hearing, are one of the best and very recognized in the scholarly community, so I would assume classes are difficult.

Great Campus/City Life...um...NYU doesn't have a campus. So i guess you should go to UChicago?

NYU has a higher admit rate (in the 20 percentile) while UChicago, I believe is 40%. But in terms of ranking...UChicago is ranked equivalent to Brown University, and NYU is ranked in the 40's.

I'm not going into Law...so I can't say. But to my knowledge, UChicago has a better reputation in general for academics because it's so hardcore. Again, there's a saying...it's the ivy league without the attitude.

I hope this helped.

I meant to say....NYU has a lower admit rate

I want to eventually get an MBA in Business. I have gotten into U of Chicago (Econ Major) and the GSP (Stern Track), NYU. Which one do you think would be better for me?

Just wondering, did you get GSPd because of a low SAT or low grades? Are you a recruited athlete? I'm just suprised that NYU would GSP you if UC accepted you for econ... I thought GSP was designed to accept kids without hurting NYU's SAT/GPA averages and have those kids build a stronger foundation so they can do well in their intended school.

Yes I was a recruited athlete and applied EA to Chicago. I had a pretty low SAT score, good math and poor CR (English is my second language) so I got a 630. My grades were pretty good though.

1)nyu, i think has the ebst social scene. u of c kids are always busy studying...lol
2)no doubt chicago is harder. economics at nyu is pretty tought oo though
3)both schools have great education opportunities and are in a great city.
4)chicago has a higher acceptance rate, but the average gpa/sat/ec's are much higher than nyu. for example - the 75% at nyu for sat is 1440. at chicago it is 1510
5)it depends what you want to do in grad school. nyu has its strengths - business, theater, etc.
at the same time, chcicaho has its strengths - there is no economics program better than chicaho and law and business schools love chicago graduates. its all relative

i am applying to both schools. i prefer chicago because of their economics department, but if i get in nyu and go there, ill be jubilant

NYU's law school is one of the best in the country, if anyone is considering law. I think it is #4 or 5. And Wagner(NYU's law school) reviews applicants from inside NYU earlier and therefore notifies them earlier of their decision. less competition from thousands of other applicants, but no doubt it is still very difficult to get in.

Wagner is the Graduate School of Public Service, not the Law School.

Nyu def has an amazing social scene..obvs it doesnt have a campus but NYC is the most amazing city in the world and theres always something to do...this view is a tad bit biased though because i havent been to chicago lol..

The rigor of the coursework varies from major to major, and also it depends on what school your in at NYU. For example, Finance at Stern is very difficult while idk..art history for example in CAS may not be as difficult. I have a close friend at UofC and she was blown away by the workload at UofC, they have a crazy core curriculum that can get pretty intense.

Which school is harder to get into? This def depends on which school you apply to at NYU. Its really hard to say which ones harder, the admissions at both schools seem random at times. For example last year, one of my friends was rejected by NYU but accepted to UofC, and another friend with better stats was rejected by UofC and accepted to NYU. it can get pretty random lol

An ivy league law school just wnats to see a high undergrad GPA and high lsats...soo at whichever school you think you could get a better GPA at, that may be your best bet. UofC is notorious for not having any grade inflation, but im sure the law schools are aware of that
