Hello!
I am a first-time poster, long time creeper on this site and I've come for some advice. I'm a senior and I have recently received my college admissions decisions. I've narrowed down my acceptances to these two schools: NYU, USC. For both schools I applied under the journalism major and I'm looking to minor in film studies. In terms of future careers...I'm looking to either write for a magazine (Vogue is my dream) or work in the film industry in some way (producing most likely, though I'm very interested in directing) As far as location goes, I tend to lean towards New York, I'm from Southern California and I would love to experience something different during my college years. Ive heard that both schools have fantastic journalism and film programs, and I've researched the courses and such myself and found that they are quite similar. And each school is going to cost me relatively the same (unnecessarily large) sum of money so reaching a decision is becomming quite difficult. So if anyone has has any information, first hand perspective, or adivce, that would be helpful because I'm basically walking this road alone. My parents and just about everyone else I know are pushing me towards Berkeley (which lacks a journalism program of any kind), just because I got a scholarship there. In addition, my father thinks USC has a bad reputation, making it difficult to get a job post-graduate...is this true? And how is the social life at NYU and USC? The student life seems very different at each school and I visited NYU two years ago so I hardly remember what is was like. Also in terms of job opportunities, internship, and study abroad, which school has the upperhand? Any information would help! Thanks!

Hi! I too am dealing with a similar decision, but I’m choosing between journalism at USC and the Gallatin school at NYU. I’m from New York, so I know a lot about student life at NYU; there’s virtually no Greek life or traditional school spirit that USC has, but the students are more tied together through the fact that they’re living together in the city. For me, it’s hard to imagine living in SC and not leaving campus ever… do you know anything else about SC student life?

I went to USC and also lived in NYC. It would probably be a good experience to get out of California and live in NYC for a few years.

I’d likewise recommend that someone who grew up in NYC go to college in LA if they had the chance.

Two very different schools in so many ways. USC is a big “rahrah” school with national sports teams and a beautiful campus, ROTC, and most of the traditional college atmosphere. NYU has no campus, dorms are spread throughout much of lower Manhattan, few sports teams (if any). Figure out what you want in a college experience other than the academics and that should help you decide what works for you. If you want a more traditional college experience and choose USC, don’t worry, New York isn’t going anywhere, it will still be there when you graduate. Good luck!
