Two big universities on either sides of the United States-- which do you think is better academically, and which is better socially (in terms of student body, social life, networking)?

Just wondering. I got into 'SC but my fellow classmates are obsessed with NYU (or anything to do with the Big Apple, really). I've always thought of both as very good schools, and about even in academic and social opportunites.

But do you feel one ups the other in either terms?

I would go to USC. I've lived in New York for most of my life.. I really think that NYC is more fun in your twenties than as a teenager (I'm not in my twenties yet, but that's what I've heard and it's definitely logical!) Plus USC has nicer weather and an actual campus, lol. Probably the main deterrent for me regarding NYU is the lack of campus and sense of community/spirit.

NYU lacks a campus and I think that definetly takes away from the college experience. I think USC will definetly give you that, and besides you can't go wrong with the Trojan Network.

Academically, they're so similar. Socially, they couldn't be more different. Well, I supposed one could be a small school in the middle of nowhere, but anyways...

Academically - SC will generally be higher ranked in most categories. Exceptions are Stern and Tisch.

Socially, USC offers the "house-party with 100+ people with dancing and kegs out back" type of scene. NYU offers the "lets use our fakes to get into that midtown bar" type scene. It really depends on what you'd prefer.

Remeber which mentality you would feel more comfortable with: east coast vs. west coast. I grew up in Toronto so east coast was the obvious choice.

also - the tisch program blew my mind away. you get placed in a professional studio your first year, you get the opportunity to broaden your acedemic base through a lot of liberal arts and most importantly you get the opportunity to show case yourself to the top industry big wigs (casting directors and agents etc.) in NY.

if you want to get places in the business and you want to make great connections NYU is a great place to be.

in regards to the lack of campus, you will make friends so quickly and discover your own NYC haunts it won't even make a difference.

"Academically - SC will generally be higher ranked in most categories."

That is completely untrue. NYU has more top ranked departments than USC. Outside of Stern and Tisch, economics, mathematics, philosophy, french, and middle eastern studies are some of the prominent NYU departments. I can't even think of any true standout USC programs besides film.

Both of these schools are great, and though they have a different environment, they've often been compared with each other...i.e. both are large private schools that continue to improve and become more prestigious. I recommend you visit both schools to get a feel for them.

how about we continue your list for usc, you have econ, film, engineering, law, business undergrad and grad, international studies, bio, medical, etc etc

Meh . . . film, yes (equal to NYU for the best), engineering, sure, yes, law, it's a very strong, regional law school, right behind the top 15 (of which NYU is very high), strong business undergraduate, sure, fairly strong graduate business, the first international studies school . . . but strength? bio?? a good medical school, yes . . .

I personally would rather go to NYU (and am very interested in it as well). Socially, they're very different. Like others have mentioned USC has a true campus an the environment is so different. Academically, very similar.
