NYU vs UW - CS

Hi,

I am looking to major in Computer Science and I'm torn between either attending NYU or University of Washington. I was accepted to a few others such as Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute and Georgia Institute of Technology but due to their location and a couple other factors I am ruling them out.

Tuition fees are not a factor, and I'm primarily concerned about faculty quality, and employment opportunities post graduation. I heard that UW is well connected with Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and a few other companies, which is why I am somewhat leaning towards UW.

I also do not care if NYU doesn't have "campus", or other small things associated with a "traditional college experience"

Any input and help would greatly be appreciated. This really has been on my mind for quite some time.

Thanks!! :)

I don’t understand why you ruled out RPI. NYU and RPI are like 3 hours far away from each other. University of Washington is on the west and 2 of them are in the east. GT is on the south so it depends on where you want to work after college. For Microsoft, Amazon definitely University of Washington.

All of them are good colleges but Georgia Tech and NYU are a notch above other two in terms of reputation. I think you should go with Georgia Tech.

I ruled out RPI for two reasons -

First I live on the west coast and RPI is quite annoying to get too. Most importantly they don’t have any rail connections.

Second, their dorms are pretty bad and quite cramped. There were a couple other things I didn’t like about the living aspect there and to top it off they require you to live on campus for the first two years.

What type of connections do Univiersites have with employers?

For example if I were to attend Georgia Tech or NYU would my chances of working at one of those mentioned companies be significantly lower?

No one in my immediate, or distant family for that matter attended a university and I’m no longer in high school so I’ve been kind of been in the dark about this for quite some time.

“Most importantly they don’t have any rail connection.”

The Rensselaer train station is about 10 minutes from RPI. During breaks, RPI provides free transporation to the train station, bus terminals, and Albany airport.

Yea, but otherwise it took about an hour to get there via public transportation from the train station. Freshman are not allowed to have cars on campus, only under special circumstances. I also am on the west coast so it would be a hassle to bring the car over to begin with.

And the shuttle is only during breaks. Otherwise you’re stuck on campus. My boarding school out in the middle of nowhere was like that, and I think my experience with that was enough.

UW is very good.
